Deep Burn Shou Sugi Ban Box

With this Shou Sugi Ban box I did a "Deep Burn" on a fully mitered Pine box.

Zoom in and check out the grain.

I then dyed it.

Afterwards, I gave it three coats of 2 pound blonde shellac.

I made a lift handle.... look closely.

Installed brass hinges....

Here's a view of the bottom.

Feel free to comment, ask questions and thumbs up if you like it!

Cheers!

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Looks great! I’ve just about got my first Shou Sugi Ban experimental box done. Couldn’t just make a simple box, I had to add a little style to it. So it’s taking a bit. Hopefully finish this week if I can find time to spray it out!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Pottz..... I did all black, no alligator skin, with this one

With all black no alligator skin the grain lies flat and sort of soft and muted. It's pretty but doesn't pop. It just a matter of using one of the techniques where the results appeal to you.  That's why it's very important to do controlled experiments and gain experience.

For the beer/bbq swap, I thought you were going for full black alligator.
Wood grain runs around the box, looks great.
Thanks Oldtool! How about a "thumbs up"

Thanks Pottz and RyanGi !!
While I appreciate Japanese woodwork and have been inspired and greatly impressed by the works of their 'Living National Treasure' - the Preservers of Important Intangible Cultural Properties, shou sugi ban or Yakisugi - the phrase the Japanese use, just doesn't appeal to me.  I think its origins were in 'protecting' the outside of wooden buildings.  It's not something I 'wood' ever consider doing to any of my boxes.  But then we are all different, and we do as we please, and appreciate different things - long may it stay that way!
you might wanna experiment with it MB, for me it will be a part of my finishing arsenal. not something id use for a lot of my work but it will have it's place. for the swap project coming up it was a perfect addition.

I know what you mean Madburg. I feel similar when boxes are made overornate.
Pottz.... looking forward to seeing photos of yours after the swap project.

Ryan..... when do we see it? Like to see what you've done.
I’ve gotten behind on it. Life getting in the way. Got the first round of finish on it finally today. Might be able to get the rest on tomorrow. We’ll see…got a couple of appointments that are going to get in the way, but it might work out.

One of my favorite books!

Here’s a link to the box experiment I did of this style.
