More Shou Sugi Ban Experimenting

So today (Fri, Aug 16), I experimented further with Shou Sugi Ban on some scrap Pine pieces.

I did a medium "alligator skin" burn on both sides.

When cooled, I used a 5" drill nylon wheel brush. It made life alot easier.

Then I water washed and dried it.

On Fig 1, I applied two coats of 1 pound shellac only. I feel it contrasts the grain better.

On Fig 2, I applied two coats of fence latex cedar stain only. If you want a softer look then this is your choice. Contrast is more subdued.

On Fig 3 and 4, I did a heavy "alligator skin" burn.

Actually, it's quite attractive as is, and with a spray lacquer or polyurethane top coat it's rather attractive. It could be left this way.

Finally on Fig. 5, I used my 5" drill nylon wheel brush again. I didn't wash or finish coat this one.

Feel free to comment, ask questions and thumbs up if you like it!

There's an update here

Cheers!

#4 is something I'm itching to try. Totally unique look. Hopefully the char stays put after a good top coat! 👍

Bruce (right?) I'm itching to try a whole box this way as well. Personally I think a spray lacquer would work well. Maybe a light coat at first and let it go bone dry. Followed by a couple more with each one being heavier. What do you think about resin? But it would have to be sprayed...I think. What about shellac?... again sprayed?
the project i did and will be revealed in a couple weeks was done about half way between 2 and 3 id say ? black but no alligator .

Look forward to seeing it Pottz! Are you happy with it?
yeah it's killer rick. it's a bbq project so burnt wood was a perfect finish. ive looked at the technique many times but had you not delved into it i doubt i would have done it. i think some will think i stained the wood black.

You seem to have his ear.. run it by him 👍
I’d be interested to see how well #4 holds up once finished. It’s a cool look if you can keep it to at way. Like someone else said, maybe epoxy resin to seal it?

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Ryan... I mentioned using epoxy. I do feel it may need some kind of binder. Whatever is used though may change the look. And I like it like it is so I'll picky about the choice.  I'll be doing more  with Fig 4 and post it.
Agreed. More testing is a win.

Interesting stuff, ya never know till ya try it. I think that thought process started a lot of firsts. Off hand I see the alligator look flaking off if it's handled much though, finish or not, unless you put some type of heavy sealing finish on it like they used to do with decoupage stuff. That was just this side of fiberglass work. It encapsulated things.
Love to see the experimentation.  My favorite variant of this is a couple good chars, not quite deep enough to form alligator skin, brushed off between each one then a few coats of Tung oil.  The look and feel is awesome and no sanding required.
