SplinterGroup #4 is something I'm itching to try. Totally unique look. Hopefully the char stays put after a good top coat! 👍
Bruce (right?) I'm itching to try a whole box this way as well. Personally I think a spray lacquer would work well. Maybe a light coat at first and let it go bone dry. Followed by a couple more with each one being heavier. What do you think about resin? But it would have to be sprayed...I think. What about shellac?... again sprayed?
yeah it's killer rick. it's a bbq project so burnt wood was a perfect finish. ive looked at the technique many times but had you not delved into it i doubt i would have done it. i think some will think i stained the wood black.
working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.
I’d be interested to see how well #4 holds up once finished. It’s a cool look if you can keep it to at way. Like someone else said, maybe epoxy resin to seal it?
Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".
Ryan... I mentioned using epoxy. I do feel it may need some kind of binder. Whatever is used though may change the look. And I like it like it is so I'll picky about the choice. I'll be doing more with Fig 4 and post it.
no ! or give me your email ? dont worry im not as dangerous as some here think ! hell i trade you my address and social security number in exchange if you want 🤔 🤣

Interesting stuff, ya never know till ya try it. I think that thought process started a lot of firsts. Off hand I see the alligator look flaking off if it's handled much though, finish or not, unless you put some type of heavy sealing finish on it like they used to do with decoupage stuff. That was just this side of fiberglass work. It encapsulated things.
Love to see the experimentation. My favorite variant of this is a couple good chars, not quite deep enough to form alligator skin, brushed off between each one then a few coats of Tung oil. The look and feel is awesome and no sanding required.
