Spalted Maple Keepsake Box

My wife's brother and his wife had their first child and my wife is the baby's godmother. Completed this Spalted maple keepsake box as a gift for her parents to store this newest addition of the family's mementos.

The maple is some I milled from a tree we took down that was interfering with our waterline.

Walnut hinge and lid accent. Oak tray and document keeper on the inside.
Swing arm latches from Amazon.

Pyrography for the monogram and birth date.

After testing varnish and not caring for how it changed the color, end up using spray can lacquer based on advice from other LJs and couldn't be more pleased with the clarity and how well the spalt shows.
The soft maple was a bit challenging to work with, but pleased with the outcome. Dimensions- 6" x 10" x 5-3/4"

Thanks for looking.

Project Information

Had a request for a pyrography piece for Christmas from the oldest granddaughter. The subject (Draco) was her request as well.
I decided to incorporate the pyrography into a box lid, rather than a piece to hang on the wall.

5"x8" maple box. Lid is a friction fit on the end grain.
real nice dan. love that spalted maple. hey if you wanna get rid of that old rotten wood i could take it off your hands ? it's what a friend does 😁😎

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Awesome! Well done.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Just love the Spalted Maple! Makes for an attractive box.
Spalted maple looks great.  The hinge has me intrigued.
Very attractive box.   As the others like the wood!

Beautiful box! I'm always impressed with wood hinges.
Thanks guys.

Earl, copied this, although too cheap to buy his stuff. I just made my own.

May be the nicest Spalted Maple object I have seen.  Love the clean finish.
