That Puzzling Cabinet

Boy and Girls,

With the influx of my puzzles, yazall must be cringing at all the “carcinogenic” MDF you have been indirectly exposed to, even if only visually.  Unfortunately even MDF is not immune to dust and the puzzles need a cabinet to keep them pristine, without that encumbering layer of dust that will impede easy(er) movement/solution.

Furthermore, I just wanted to try to convince some readers that I can work in non-MDF media, albeit the cheaper pine variety.

While this was originally posted at LJ on 1st March 2021, it has since been over populated
and looking for cabinet #5 because of the repeated overflow into #3,
So sit back and endure what those poor wretches (and rich) were exposed to in 2021 at LJ, and if you happened to have been exposed there, are you game enough to tolerate that pain again?

Boy and Girls,

C'mon guys and gals, sit back and enjoy the saga of a semi crippled dodger with the difficulty to raise a glass of vino in toasting the end of the duck season and a crappy project.

No need for rose petals, blank cheques or small animal sacrifices, this is no big deal, and being my proposed 4th cabinet,
is bugger all to brag about, but with my dodgy left arm and clawed fist it was a laborious toil.
All my other cabinets took about 1 week, including paint dry time… this one dragged out over 10 weeks… and only a few drinks in between.

The finish is crap, the dovetails are featherless, the dents in the pine are profound, the pride is negligible, but completing was gratifying.

Started off with a few pine boards
that I think the inflation wizard waved his magic wand over… glass and hardware was less than that "exotic" radiata pine.

From SketchUp
to a measurement diagram,
I progressed to my Frontline clamps (Yo Con),
to get my 320mm width planks.

Used Alexa as my glueup timer,

Made a tracksaw mounting/cutting skin for one of my benchtops,
and using my tracksaw, cut the panels to length,
Ready for the FOP and SIT,
Front Outside Pin and Side Inside Tail…

Uplifting my progress with a lifter trolley and the D4R,
the dovetails took shape.

You'd think that with this 4th. attempt I knew what I was doing, however, it was pure klutz

I had the clamps for the length and width but lacked the length for the diagonal squaring after measurements.  Waiting for my extenders I bluffed my way through…
We always find/manage workarounds, but the convenience of the right tool beats the shit out of time wasting… even if a tad late.

Was a tad more than generous with my dovetail overlaps,
ruffled a few feathers using my Rotex,
After glueup the cabinet needed to be rotated for sanding.  Having fitted the back MDF sheet for stability,
grip became an issue and I found the Grabo an invaluable tool
for getting that grip with my dodgy arm to at least facilitate manipulation.
Even did some manual labour after screwing up a belated tracksaw cut that had to be plugged,
Measured for fitting some piano hinges,
trimmed to size using my cordless bandsaw,
With all this flipping and dropping 'cause of my dodgy arm, this became a very popular tool,
to iron out all the dings I managed to acquire free of charge.

To ease the burden while fitting out and painting, I hoisted it up on my trolley so it could be jacked up to back friendly heights. My Hitch Master and Grabo came to my rescue as my normal chain block didn't have the clearance,
Finally mounted 6 pull out shelves,

Plenty of clamps and squares assisted in ensuring the door frame  with the glass inserted, was square,
Used my Fe$tool VAC SYS to hold  the glassed door for final trimming,
and manipulated for staining and varnishing,
Final coat of varnish (after stain) on the last door and I got a tad cocky, swinging the door off the VAC SYS using the Grabo,
I swung the loaded door into the corner of my router table shattering the glass.

Bugger… the glass was glued inside the frame during assembly and there was no way I could install another pane without a new frame.
Had a light bulb moment and decided to rout away one of the rails using my oblong router jig,
inserted the glass, and screwed a retainer piece to the remaining rail,

Reminder to self to do this for the NEXT cabinet right from the start.... unlike in my workshop… I have room upstairs,

Then came the chore of emptying out my other cabinets
and populating this one with the puzzles…
Quickly running/ran out of space

but two other cabinets now have room for more models,
… or maybe plenty more puzzles!

If you managed to get this far… be complacent in the fact that the animal nightie will not be seen!

Keep safe, jocks... and your jocks, safe!

Not only are the cabinets nice they are full.   Inside and out good work.

You have that environment for holding and manipulating these large projects down to a science, but how do you get that beast inside?

Always a positive to find/make more room to expand collections, very well thought out displays!
Better than the IKEA ones I have. Nice cabinet Alex.

Thanks guys....

The beastie goes walkies around the block to the back door on a trolley (with me... won't let it go alone unsupervised)... Now that I have the hitch,,, I might have to work on a towing methodology.

Its good to see you using real timbers instead of burning the cardboard. You have all the high tech gadgets,
corelz remember timber in aus. is very expensive ! but using cheap mbf saves money for high dollar tools man ! there is a madness to ducks motives !!!😎

Thanks, sort off... but mine is probably much dearer.  This unit was built about 3.5 years ago and today I've just costed the same, as I need to expand... now it's going to cost a tad under 60% more...  and I haven't even costed the black stain, glue, hardware (runners) or glass... and our govermin says inflation is just 6%.

Yeah, I see the potential!

Woodworkers here and Pottz has unfettered access to a full service lumber yard.

We need to coordinate and get out a shopping list so he only has to make a single shipping loop around the country (and world). Wouldn't want to put him out too much for all the free supplies! 🤠

 SplinterGroup
.... for all the free supplies!
Let's get real... it wouldn't be for free... but, I'm benevolent enough to let him pay for all of it... priority airfreight!.. after all, pottzy can afford to retire soon.

Except for ipe? Hmmmmm. 🤔
Special orders! List is being formed.
yeah ive scored some ipe for free. seems some always gets left out in the weather and no one wants to buy it. a little sanding and some oil and it looks like new.

With a coat of stain, no one's gonna know whats underneath... why the hell do you think I wear that thin cotton nightie... not to keep warm.

You're gonna miss the ladies from work that you could distribute your bowls to... W's gonna turn into Kel Snake or you'll just have to make a cabinet... plans available... I will throw in a puzzle to bowl unit converter for free.
