Spring Bench

Building a bench around an 1800's wagon spring

My friend Leon Kytle in Idaho Falls gave me this old spring from a wagon seat from the 1800's and asked me to design a bench around it and give him the plans so he could build one too around the other spring. I drew it up in Arizona with the bend up and down and decided it looked better with it bent down. I made us templates of the spring curve and gave him a drawing of how I was going to make it. But when I got home he called and said he thought the spring should be spread wider for stability. I agreed and started a design as you go project.

I made all the parts of the bench out of Chestnut and all fasteners are Stainless. It now sits on our front  porch and replaced the old made made from treated pine!

I just found the early photos of the building of the bench and the original spring when it was 6" wide across the two springs with a forged offset piece connecting them.  I had to  make some pieces to spread the springs wider before installing them on the fame of the bench.
I can't post the images of the spring modification because they are in the wrong format.

Great use of such a cool old thing!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Great project definitely looks heavy enough. Excellent job.

Seems comfortable, looks good... but I'd bet you'd freeze your bum off in winter, swelter in summer and get covered in autumn leaves.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Unless it's B & W negatives... you should be able to change format... many freebie services on-line...

Wow, that's very nice. My first impression upon seeing the photo was wagon seat, you did a great job in design, and fantastic work in construction. The hefty appearance of the bottom structure is the perfect size for these springs. Great work. 👍👍
Jim,

That is a very cool bench!

Thank you all for the nice comments. The feet are a little bulky but I wanted it to be stable especiall with all the weight on one side.

Hi Ducky, It is in the cold now, but in the warmer season, I sit oust there with the great granddaughters and eat popsicles. The porch is covered by a roof so it is nice out there.
I tried Image Converter and when I went to grab an image from my downloads file, they were gone. I not a computer jockey and this stuff  is beyond my pay grade!!

Excellent Jim!

Wonder if the young 'uns will discover the physics of using the springiness as a launching platform?
oh man i can see some high dives off that thing 😱 😬

Thanks Bruce and Pottzy! It is not that springy and little one can hardly make it move...... it is a pretty stiff spring!

Thanks, Ivan. We got all that chestnut wood from the  orchard in Hudsonville and I made a lot of projects out of  it.
