Little "Tinker"

I made this little mallet for hitting  (tinking)  things that I don't want to mar or dent like a steel hammer would do. I picked up this pistachio branch at the mill and it was cracked everywhere. To salvage the wood to make this mallet, I had to rip the logs along the cracks, run them through the table saw and jointer and put 4  pieces back together to get the blanks to turn.  I turned the handle on 3 centers to make the oval hand grip.
I added a photo of what is left of the original branch.
I filled the remaining cracks with turquoise inlay and coated it with Danish Oil. The last shot is after buffing ans waxing......................................Cheers, Jim

Those aren't branches Jim, they are old-growth tree trunks (around here at least) 🤠

That's pretty impressive given what you started with. Nice job!
Very nice Jim, that would make a sweet wooden plane adjuster.

Thanks  for all the nice comments.

Hi Bruce. John brought all these pistachio trees up from California 2 years ago. He bought a whole orchard of trees- 3 semi loads. I bought one of the trunks for $200 and had it sliced lengthwise and it was  cracked all over. It was about 12" in diameter. I got this piece from the boxes with all the branch stock. I wish I had a vacuum chamber to pull epoxy into one of these pieces before machining it!!
