Sushi Plate

“Sara” is a Japanese word for “dish” or “plate.” Many sara are round-shaped, but they also come in a variety of shapes like square, or long and narrow.

I make sushi but haven't had any for a while. Just recently we started eating all kinds of sushi again.

Then it dawned on me I could make my own "Sara" or sushi plate. It's made out of Pine. Shellacked and a couple of coats of wood butter.

In addition, I made the chopstick stand known as the "hashi-oki" chopstick rest. Sometimes also referred to as a "hashi-makura", or chopstick pillow.
.... and I made the chopsticks as well!

On the ends, I chiseled in some stopped chamfers so it's easy to pick up and the legs are full length sliding dovetails.

All in fun. I'm sure I'll be asked to make more. LOL.

Thanks for looking!
Cheers!

That's pretty nice! Got to love a clear pine plank. Those "feet" will help reduce warping, too.

Thanks Dark_Lightning! Yes that true. Sliding Dovetails worked well and definitely will structurally prevent warping. I'm happy with it.
Thank you Steve! It was a fun thing to make.
Bet the sushi even taste better off this Sara.

MrRick, the part of this that I find most interesting is the dovetailed legs. Joinery is a favorite aspect of woodworking for me, don't know why. Your tails are nice and tight, look great. Good work.

I think so too Ron!  I'll post a photo when there's actually some sushi in it!
Love it Rick!  I really like Sushi and having the proper setting for it makes it even more enjoyable 😀  I'll have to add this idea to my list of stuff I want to make.

And getting chamfers that clean in pine endgrain takes some talented chiselin'.  Kudos!
Thanks Ken!  I love hand tools and using my chisels to do stop chamfers is one of my woodworking loves along with handcut dovetails. Cheers!

Thank you so much Oldtool!  I love joinery and always try to incorporate one of the many kinds in my woodworking. IMO, Joinery, especially dovetails, lends an element of class to the work. All the more so if it's done with hand tools instead of machine and pulled off rather perfectly. I enjoy the journey.
Cheers!
