1/8" Parting Tool

I was looking to buy a 1/8" parting tool because ever so often I have a need for a thinner one. I could not find one so I made one. I found this bar of 1/8" x 1/2" x 8" M42 High Speed Steel on line and it was already hardened to 65-68 Rockwell C...so all I had to do was make a handle for it.  I thought I could make it a double ended one if I had a way to hold it tight from either end. That worked out with a threaded insert installed in  and a rectangular groove milled in before turning.  Now I have a parting tool on one end and 1/8" ball end on the other for grooving, etc! The blade is held in with 1/4"-20 set screw
The handle is made from spalted beech wood and finished with EEE and Shellawax .

May you have the day you deserve!

"I couldn't find one so I made it"

You are the master of this!! Nice build
Nice thinking Jim, a tool made for your specific needs with two functions. It doesn't get any better than this.
Great tool Jim.  I really like the handle idea too.  Gets you twice the mileage out of a bar!
I like the design. Looks stable.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Don't you just love making tools? I do. It's fun. Sure... everyone loves a really nice good quality bought tool but more often than not what you make is better and custom to you. Proof of this is right here. The old saying "Inspiration out of Desperation often is so true. Good on ya Jim!
Well thought out tool.

Thank you all for the nice comments.

Hi Rick, I had a tool and die instructor who always encouraged us to make our own tools. He said " you appreciate it more if you make it yourself".  I guess I live by that!

Tolerances are a lot tighter when you make your own too!
Hi Ken. That's right...you pend that extra time to get it just like you want. And you have the option to change dimensions to make it more suiting to your needs. I'll have to post a drill fixture I made that has 40 hours of grinding on it to get it just right!!!

That must be one important drill fixture!
Hi ken. It is for drilling round pied right through the center. I checked a 1 5/8" piece  of steel and it was within .0005" from side to side. I don't use it a lot but when I need 2 pieces to line up and be able to turn them and line up, I use it...or fit onto a piece that already has a hole through the center..

I’d be interested to see it for sure.
