Snifters for Bourbon

A lot of my friends and my son in law drink that real expensive bourbon ( one fifth costs more than 3 cases of Molson Canadian beer). They said that the bourbon tastes much better out of a white oak charred vessel, so I made a couple of these vessels to test it out. They tried it at breakfast today and all agreed it is much smoother out of the charred white oak- like the barrel it is aged in.  They said it takes  away the "bite" .
I could not find any full thickness ( 3" ) white oak at any of the mills here or in Indiana. So Doug Scott gave me a 5 quarter plank and I had to laminate it. The snifters are 2 1/2"  in diameter and 3 3/4" high. The inside is burnt to where the wood is red with a flame on it. The last shot was right after the flame went out- I was not quick enough. I char the inside before completing the piece so it is still in the chuck when charred. The outside is finished with clear lacquer, then sanded to 2400 and finished with EEE and Shellawax.
More to come!!.............Cheers, Jim

Looks good! Almost makes me want to start drinking again.

I want to do right, but not right now. Gillian Welch

Neat Jim!
Now you need to make some with the barrel hoops and actual staves 🤠
Thanks, Harry , Steve and Bruce

Thanks for the idea, Bruce. That would be most fitting. I have made a lot of barrels with painted on hoops...here come some more!!!!!!!!! I'm cutting white oak this morning!!

I like the look, if it makes that stuff milder, all the better. Me, I'd prefer the Molson's. :-)
Hi George...Me too! Thanks, Cheers, Jim

Ooooo-la-la! But single malt scotch would be better! 😉 Good work Jim!
Thanks Rick. Is scotch aged in a charred white oak barrel too?

Very nice timber glasses 👍

Good to know the Cases of Molson exchange rate.  Cases of Molson beats cryptocurrency any day.

--Nathan, TX. Hire the lazy man. He may not do as much work but that's because he will find a better way.

Thanks Peter and Nathan!! Just think going to the store and the price of something was 3 Molsons!!!!!!!!!!!The barter system is a live and well!! I just turned out 8 more white oak blanks for future bourbon vessels!!!!!!!

How many cases of Molson for a custom bourbon vessel?  😀

Those are awesome!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Those are real nice. Love the idea.
Nice snifters.

Didn't know about the charred oak, but then, I'm a peasant when it comes to drinking.

Surprised any drink that expensive needs the "Bite" taken away 😲
Thanks, Ryan, Gary and Mike..

I was not making any for sale- just gifts to me local bourbon drinking buddies. If I were to sell one it might be 2 24 cases of Molson Canadian beer!

Same here, but Jim left a clue that the evaluators were experts:

They tried it at breakfast today and all agreed it is much smoother out of the charred white oak-

Breakfast Bourbons! Doesn't get much more dedicated that than!🤠
