Post 1 Of Bourbon Barrel Mugs

My Loving Wife surprised me with a purchase of 60 old bourbon barrel staves. Each stave is approximately 33 inches long.
I cut them into 7-inch lengths 4 out of each stave)
Leaving 5-inches that made some good coffee mugs.
I then toyed with a different number of pieces to form the mug. Finaly settling with 9 @ 1 1/2 inches wide.
With that, divide 360 by 9 = 40. Then divide that by 2 = 20. (or 80 degrees) That is the angle of the table saw blade cutting when each side of mug stave.
Glue them up using type III or if you want 2-part epoxy resin between each stave. Use large hose clamps x2 on each mug. let it set for at least 2 days.
I then then turn them inside and out. Add a bottom. Sand them up to 250 grit. Add a wire burn line top and bottom.

Part 2 of the post will show adding the handle and sealing the mugs to make them usable.

Nice, white oak!

If you left the char on the inside, you could be having some "Irish coffee" in the mornings.

Looking nice!
They look great. How do you wash them?

James McIntyre:
They are hand wash only.

The Boxer

Looks good so far. Do they lay flat to use a sander? Or is it all hand sand penance?
Nice final product!!!!!!!!
