Walking Cane

My grand father asked me to make a walking cane so I made a custom walking cane with the size he requested.

Since I've never seen a walking cane in person like with the aspect to make it myself, it was difficult to visualize the final product. In addition, it was a challenge for me to make a tapered cane rod with hand tools.

The handle was hand carved. This Japanese blacksmith-made blade, set into a kitchen knife handle, cuts really well.

I bought all the hardware from Treeline USA.

The balance between the handle and the body felt a little off but somehow I was able to make something similar to what I imagined and successfully delivered it to him.

Maybe I can improve the next one for my dad, and hopefully, by the time I make one for myself, I will be able to make a really good one, haha.

Thank you!

Very nice! Looking forward to viewing the video.
Great cane and fine video. Maybe Martin can market your canes here.

Thank you BB! I hope you'll enjoy it:)
TheWoodGuy - Thank you! Maybe I can make a handle part but it's super inefficient to make a rod to sell with hand tool, haha.
Pottz, Thank you! Overall, I’m happy with it, but there’s a lot I could improve after making one...

Has a definite appeal.   The proportions between handle and rod are visually great.    The handle design adds a lot.   Overall a really good looking and function able cane.

Making something round from square only using hand tools isn't an easy task. You did a fine job if that
Thank you Ron! I could definitely improve the transitions between the handle and the rod. The good looking zebrawood made it look nice!
Carelz, Thank you! It was physically tough to shave the square hard maple into a rod, as I reduced one end by a little less than 3/4" from 1.5". I need a real scrub plane.

Nice looking cane! Looks about like mine, except mine is oak. I purchased it already made, though. It's from Ukraine.

Thank you DL! Oak is nice. To be honest, I wanted to use a darker wood but the maple was only the straight grain wood I found that's long and thick enough.
Thank you Gary:)

Very nice work and great video.
Nice, YRTi! I've tried to avoid short-grain in the handle, but 3 of the 4 canes I've made were for men over 120kg, and I suspect your grandfather is a bit lighter than that. I'll be interested to hear how it holds up.

May you have the day you deserve!

Thank you, Birdseye!
Dave, I put 1/2" oak dowel inside the handle almost all the way up and my grand father is I think less than 120lb so it should be okay hopefully. Thank you so much for the inspiration and I was also so happy with the tru oil, you introduced me to.
