Last year, when I made my ""second glass ball coffee table":https://woodworkingweb.com/creations/707-glass-ball-coffee-table-2-martini-time " I purchased some butternut to use for the legs and the lower shelf. The remaining butternut had a knot hole in it and parts of it were a bit wormy. This portion was not suitable for the table, but could be used for some boxes.
This is the first of two boxes that I made with this leftover butternut. The boxes is splined and trimmed with walnut. The small box inside is made with some leftover ash.
One evening, as a result of poor lighting and some over exuberant and hasty sanding with my random orbital sander, I inadvertently sanded a corner off the lid to the point where it no longer lined up with the body of the box. Frustrated with myself for making this mistake, I set the box aside. Coming back to it a few days later, I decided that the best way to salvage it was to shape the remainder of the box.
The box is finished with shellac, rubbed out, then waxed. It measures 9 1/2” x 6” x 5 1/4”.
Even with a mistake it turned out great.
