Desk box

Another older project that resides in South Africa.  It was made as a Christmas present for my nieces husband.  Its Japanese in style - a box on a base with a lift-off cover.

Its base is from woodie-pear though I'm unsure what the box part is made from. Its construction is simple glued mitre joints with decorative splines added for strength.

The outer cover is my usual veneered marine ply.  Its design was inspired by light refracting through a prism.

The 'light' beam strings on the dyed black veneer are pau shell, mother of pearl shell, and faux tortoise shell with sycamore edgings strips.
I think the two circles on the top were just filled with gold dust or my be gold sparkly nail varnish!!  The inside of the cover is veneered with paulownia.
Its quite small at around 4 inch  100mm square.

Thanks for looking.

Funny, was made so long ago you forgot what you made it out of.  I have some like that too.
Looks like some of the mystery wood is zebrawood.

Thanks for posting.
