Well ive done bowls but never wood spoons so i thought, salad bowl set. This all starts with a 3-1/2 x 7-1/2 x 8' piece of maple that gets cut into square blocks for the bowls. Two pieces were glued together to make the large bowl. The small bowls were all turned on my jet midi lathe but the large one had to be done with hand tools.
After gluing the two pieces together i glued a 3/8" think piece of mahogany to the top and bottom, then cut round on the lathe.
The angle on the side of the large bowl was done on the band saw.
Next i drilled out the bulk of the wood on the drill press.
Now i used a holey galahad grinding wheel on my small grinder. These work very fast yet are very easy too control.
The rest of the work was all done with sanders getting it as smooth as possible. Yes a lot of work but a lathe was out !
Last i added a 3/4" bottom of mahogany.
Now for the smaller bowls it was all lathe work.
First a piece of 3/8" mahogany was glued to one side of the small bowls.
Now the bottom gets turned flat.
Here the sides have been tapered to match the large bowl and the mortise that the chuck will mount to.
Now the center is turned. the hole is for determining the depth i wanted, and too avoid going through the bottom 😢
Last here is the rough cut serving spoons.
These got shaped with a arbor tech ball grinder attachment for a small grinder. Next i used a proxxon long neck mini grinder with a flap wheel for more shaping. And then finished with hand sanding. also used a convex spoke shave for shaping the handles.
The large bowl is 3-3/4" tall and 12" diameter. The small bowls are 3-3/4" tall and 7" diameter. The spoons are 9" long. All are made from maple and mahogany trim. Finish is 4 coats of gf wood bowl finish. They recommend only 3 coats but i went with 4 sanding lightly with 220 grit between coats. Any questions please ask.
