16 Sided Bowls

After making the coopered door chest decided to continue in that area.....thus coopered bowls, 16 sided, two diameters. 
The idea came from an article in Fine Woodworking Magazine.

The larger bowl is 9 3/4" in diameter, 2 3/8" tall.  Small bowl is 6 1/4" in diameter and 2 1/4" tall.   Both are made of Mahogany with a 1/8" thick Mahogany ply bottom set into a groove around the bottom.   The ply turned out to be a bit lighter in color.   Worked ok.

Construction was done by deciding on 16 staves.   Planed a board to 1/2" for the large and 3/8" for the small.   Slats were then cut to slightly over 2" and 1 1/4"    These were then cut to the lengths for the staves and the 1/8" groove for the bottom using the table saw.   
Used a 3/8" diameter router bit to cut the ends.   These were cut deep enough so the bowls would stack.   Router bit cut inside on the top and outside on the bottom.   The router work was done before the sides cut to angle.   There by any router splintering could be cut off by the side cut on the table saw. 
The side angles of each stave was determined by dividing 360 degrees (bowl diameter) by 32 (number of sides of staves 2 x 16)   360/32=11.25 degrees.   7 bowls of each size x 16=112 staves of each size,  Cut a few extra for the expected mistake here or there or the stave that just did not look right.
This angle was set on my Micro Mark table saw and the sides were cut.   Did not do this on the 10" Delta Table Saw as cutting such small pieces would be to difficult and even dangerous.   Used a Wixley digital angle gauge to set the blade angle.
This gave 120 plus of each size of stave.

Long piece of plywood was cut to have a 1/8" piece of ply running the length to accommodate 16 staves.  Same set up board for both sizess each done individually.

Blue tape used to hold 16 staves together.

This was turned over as a unit and blue tape was added to contain any squeeze out.   There was actually very little

Rolled this up into the round shape and made a template from poster board.   Once this template was determined to be a fit the template was used to mark 1/8 ply this was then cut out on the bandsaw.

Final finish of the bottom sanded on a disk sander.
glue added to the stave sides and the bottom inserted and the bowl rolled up into the final shape.
Rubber bands were used to help pull all together. 

light sanding then 3 coats of Osmo finish.    Few days later a bit of wax and buffed to a light shine.

Made 7 large bowls and 7 small these are now set aside for maybe Christmas gifts for the girls
Girls meaning wife, daughter, dil, granddaughter.   
Fun project although a bit tedious making that many.

Nice work and write-up Ron, these will make great Christmas gifts for the ladies. I'm thinking that making this many bowls was tedious, but once a machine setting was perfected, banging out the other identical parts should go fairly quick. That true?

Tedious or boring cutting one pass on 220 plus pieces.    Yes, once set up not difficult.   Must do my best not to get absent minded and have an accident.

Ivan is the champ on production.    I am just lazy so make the same thing for all the girls.
