Just another trophy. But his one was seen on national television. This past weekend Fallen Oak (golf course owned by the Beau Rivage) hosted the Champions Tour Mississippi Gulf Resorts Classic tournament. The tournament director selected the crystal cup on top of the trophy but wanted a substantial base. They had selected a 2-tier base but it only came in high gloss rosewood and they wanted black. So I was called upon to see what I could do.

I started with 3/4” poplar and duplicated each of the 2 sections. After assembly every little nick and ding was filled and sanded to 320 grit. 2 coats of filler primer with 400 grit sanding between gave me a good base. Next 4 coats of high gloss black lacquer with 600 grit wet sanding after the 1st 2. Finally, 10 coats of clear lacquer with 1000 grit sanding to finish it off. The trophy was attached using gel epoxy.

I didn’t get any personal pictures as the battery in my camera was dead on the morning of delivery. So these are from local media after David Frost won today. The first 3 pictures are of the winner with the trophy. 4th picture is Tom Lehman teeing off with the trophy behind him. And the final picture is of David Frost being presented the $240.000 (yes, I said $240,000) winners check with the trophy on the left side.

Nice work. And great exposure. I guess they’ll be coming back and you know they can afford more than a trophy. I’m sure the clubhouse could use some sprucing up. ;-)

Very cool! And a beautiful trophy!
