Chip carving knives.

From inspiration from others on this site, I wanted to make some carving knives.
I got some old HSS saw blades from my friend, Bruce in Beeville Texas.
This is the result. One finished viking style (rope handle), the other in a more modern style ( blade sandwiched between 2 pieces maple). See the blade on pic 5. The HSS seems real easy to work with as it tolerates high temps. without losing any temper.

Enjoy.

BTW, your knives are better than I am ….. I can’t tolerate a whole lot of heat without losing my temper. :-)

Paul as a boat builder I am sure that you know not to lose your temper.
As a teen and young adult I grew in Humlebæk Denmark and did an awful lot of sailing/racing. One of the boats was a S&S 34 footer, woodbuilt of course by my friends in their shipyard. This shop had several of what we called rueing chairs. To be used when a piece of wood would not do, what you wanted it do.
I am sure that your shop was outfitted the same, and therefore I know that you have a lot of patience.

Nice little carving knifes and the handles look like they will be very controllable in your hand , something that is on my list but I am sort of in the plane making mode and made an iron from a worn out dado chipper got lucky with the steel it takes a great edge but very hard to grind and hone .

Nice carving knives. I like the one with rope on the handle.
I bet you get better handling and control.

I have a table saw blade that lost some teeth.
Since only the teeth are carbide I suppose I can use the body…

Beautiful work making those little carvers. They are way better than anything you can buy I’m sure. They must stay sharp a long time.
