Barge pole rack

These were made for some friends that live on a narrowboat. It wasn’t terribly challenging except that the boat is 2.5 hours down the motorway and I had to guess on the paint colour from memory.

The wood is from the old school rafters, the burgundy paint is “10 year exterior oil”, three coats.

I’m currently building a new dining table/convertible bed for them which will probably be the subject of a blog soon.

Looks Like a good fit, this is a project I’ve never made and can’t see that I ever will. Well done.

Nice work. Wondering if the striped colors on the post represents anything?

the whole boat was a work of love by an older man that built it to a traditional plan. The paint job on the boat cost him nearly £10,000.00 This included the striped pole which is cool but I’m not certain if any bargeman would have bothered back in the day, although it would make it easy to spot if it fell overboard. The aft cabin is done in the combed paint that looks like wood grain and the exterior is a wonderland of reds and greens and yellows and blues.

Sadly all the money went to the hull, the paint job and the drive train so the interior needs a lot of work. We’re working on it. Far too much paneled plywood. The dinette/bed broke. It was 1/4" ply with a 1/2" trim of oak nailed to it. I’m amazed it lasted at all. Nails in the edge of ply…go figure.

I’ve got a good plan for it’s replacement. Stay tuned.

1st class job on the chocks. Spent my career as a boat/ship builder and those are better than I could make. By all means post the pics of the renovations, I for one will be very interested.
Nice work on that rack. Designed for a purpose and fulfilled it very well!!
