I’m so excited to share these photos of our piece for the Texas Furniture Makers Show! (Oct.27th-Dec.3rd) We dropped the table off in Kerrville last Monday. The awards reception will happen on Saturday, and we have fingers crossed!
Spider and I chose to create this tribute to Willie to reflect the place he occupies in so many Texan hearts, and beyond! We consider him to be a National Treasure, not only for his remarkable music, but also for the powerful contribution he continues to make for U.S. Farmers through his Farm Aid benefits. Truly a hero to our country.
It is our intent in this design to express all of the good he brings to so many, represented by the diverse, colorful lines emanating from his guitar. (If you look at the detail shot, you will see that we used a beautiful Rosewood veneer for the guitar)
There are about 25 different species of woods here.
I also chose for reference a rare photo showing Willie with his long hair down and flowing down his back, instead of the customary shots of his signature braids and hat. I feel this lends a more intimate feeling to this piece; an “inside look” into the soul of the man.
Along the skirt on all sides are song titles of some of his more familiar pieces, which are separated by a small leaf from a plant he favors. The songs are done in different fonts, to express the personality of each song.
The base of the table is made up of hand-hammered steel legs joined by a trestle piece, laser cut from 1/4” steel, that forms a musical staff that represents the first three bars of Willie’s song, “Crazy”, which is also the name of this piece. You will see that name centered on the front skirt as well.
As you may know, Spider Johnson is one of the top 5 Fine Art Wood Marquetry Masters in the U.S., as well as an accomplished musician, having grown up with and played music with the great Lubbock singer-songwriters. I began my apprenticeship in marquetry with Spider 6 years ago. We have since become the dearest of friends, and are now collaboration partners in our company, 3 of Hearts Design.
This is the first of a signed, limited edition of 8. We hope you enjoy!
