Keenkee box hinge

I never thought I'd rate a hinge, especially since you usually get what you pay for.

I love Brusso hinges, but with current prices they are ~ $50 for an equivalent.
Perfection for sure but wayyyy over the budget for what I can sell a box for.

Horton Brass are also great at a slightly lower price, but still $$

I found these gems on Amazon

They are solid brass, machined thick like the Brusso and Horton's, not stamped.
Also they are tight to the pins so nice and smooth without slop.

Best part?
$13 for 4 hinges! ($6.50/pair)

They come with bright brass plated (steel) screws, 1/2" long

I believe the radius on the corners is 8mm, but 5/16 should get close enough.
Packaged like they mean it

Way better then the usual thin metal hinges that can be found everywhere.
Should add that unlike the cheap hinges where the knuckle is formed by bending the tabs over the pin, this hinge has a solid knuckle that is drilled through, hence the reduced slop.

Brushed finish, but being brass, that can be changed with the right chemicals or heat if you want darker.

Not exactly Brusso, but the closest I have found for about 15% of the cost.

Kinda, but I usually either swap out the screws or treat them the same as the hinge if I go for darkening.

I'd bet the screws are lacquered and might get darker on their own, something to try.
Nice info! I put them on my wish list
Thanks Splint!  As usually, great info..

Great find Splinter. Nice if you have to sell them. For me it’s usually something I’m going to keep or give to my children and grand children. I’ll stick with the American made Horton-Brasses.

I have seen your boxes. Maybe you’re selling them to cheep? ☹️ I’ve seen boxes on line for many hundreds of dollars and they are not as good as yours.

Will a magnet attract the pin? If not, I may buy some. They look really nice.

Thanks for the info Splint. I may have a use for some of these.

Nice!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

I'm aligned with Jim

I buy from Brusso when they offer the 15% off.  Usually, 2x per year.

Splint those hinges do have a place.  do they offer a jig for use with a router?  (ie like Brusso?)  Also I like the 95 degree stop.

I actually tested the hinge for that. No attraction on the leafs or pin. I'll recheck the pin to be sure.

The Brusso hinges use stainless steel pins which makes a difference in smoothness, but brass is ok at the price.
Petey, these are not 95 degree stop hinges (wish they were!)

No jig, but super simple to just make one.
I'll detail that with the project I'm working on now since I'll be also using these hinges.

I use to buy Brusso's everytime they had a 50% sale a few years back. I keep a box of them with the price I paid marked on the package. The small 95 degree stop hinges (jb-101?) were $10. Now they are $47.

I agree with the comments about "keeper" items. That is why I really want some "good" hinges for the stuff I sell so it will last, just don't want to loose $25 on every box I sell.
Split,

I will buy some at that price.  Use them in boxes for those that don't want to pay for quality.  I can see how a jig would be really simple to make.  I would appreciate if you do make one that you post it as well.

Hi Splinter. I wouldn’t even sell those tightwads those Chinese hinges. They wouldn’t know a stamped hinge from a forged hinge.

I noticed in their advertising the barrels are perfectly aligned in the photo you took above.

But in the photo you took they’re out of line. Thanks for posting that discrepancy. 🤨

James McIntyre

Actually that is just the gap for the opposite leafs knuckles. You can kinda see the knuckle alignment in my last photo.

I hear ya re. the tightwads, but there is some positive feedback when opening a lid with decent hinges versus one yazzing around on loose hinge pins.
Splint

I could not find a smaller hinge.  Those are 2" long. I use the Brusso 1 1/4" and mostly the 3/4" hinges JB101 and 102

Petey

Steven, just rechecked and the pins are brass.
Petey,
I have a load of the shorter hinges, both low dollar and Brusso. For my current project I needed  something more substantial hence the search for a 1-1/2" + length and still narrow enough for the 1/2" wide frame on the box. I do wish I could find the same with the 95 degree stop, but now I'll have to figure some kind of stop for the lid.

The best top quality short hinges 1" and below I have found are the Horton's. They come with a range of finishes and are not overly expensive for what you get. Alas, also not a stop hinge.

I do have some 3" narrow piano style stop hinges which have potential for projects, but they are also thin and stamped.
