Look what Santa Amazon brought me today!
I plan to make big salt water fishing lures this winter. While looking for a hogger rasp I came across this guy. Works pretty well. Made quick work out of the end of this 2×3. Only cost $16.

I’ve used one of those to shape straight shovel handles into the bullnosed ones favoured here in the UK. Awesome tool, a draw knife and that baby…shovel handle heaven.
You will love it.

Looks like a cool tool.

Interesting! I’ve seen those on Lee Valley and wondered how well they work.

I haven’t used it except for that little test on the 2×3, I’m not sure it’s any faster than any other large tooth rasp, but there is a coarse and fine side. The fine side leaves a fairly clean surface. That was noted in the reviews and it seems to be reasonable. Time will tell. I’m going to try to sneak into the shop and give it a try. Since it’s a hand tool (quiet) I can use it at night. ;-)

Works pretty well. I made up the blank yesterday afternoon from the same 2×3 as the test. My biggest problem was not having a good vise. That’s something I have to take care of soon.

That is one big lure. Beluga whales?

Striped bass. Just got back from testing it in the water. Swims great and casts pretty well considering it’s shape. Weighs 3 ounces. No fish today. They all went south for the winter. Next task is to paint it.

By the way, the blank for that was made by slicing the 2×3 lengthwise, cutting a channel down the center and also to the front hook (like a T), then shaping a wire to fit in this slots, then gluing the two halves together with the wire inside.

I’m going to write a review. Need to use it a little more first.

I’m a little down the road for offering a congratulations, but congratulations. Have you got to test drive a lure yet?
Hey, I just made a bunch of small parts holding jig. I’m assembling a post, but they “might” help here. I’ll try to get it up in the next few days. You could modify it, such as by drilling a hole in it and mounting it to another piece of wood for the angle you need.
Actually I made a few holders by drilling a hole in a short piece of lumber with a forstner bit, then ripping it in half and sanding the edges smooth. That way I end up with 2 “U” shaped things. The lure blank goes between and gets clamped in a vise. It works pretty well except when the blank is very soft wood. I should make a couple out of Styrofoam. I have a few with different sized holes and one that I cut again to shape like a pincer so the holder doesn’t wrap the entire blank.
