In my 20's I hurt my hand competing in wrestling and required surgery. Rehab of my hand got me interested in working with my hands full time. I began bookbinding, owned my own business for a couple years, figured out I was better at being a craftsman than a business man. I discovered marquetry a little after getting into woodworking and have become obsessed since.
I took online courses with Paul Miller (Shipwright) and his amazing School of French Marquetry and have not looked back since. I have been learning and trying out many techniques from the past to create marquetry (I cut using a chevalet and have been using a shoulder knife recently).
My passion is deep into the working knowledge and techniques of marquetry. Although I do care about how the final piece looks, I appreciate the challenge of the project overall. It is this learning that drives me to further increase my skills in this craft.
working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.
