Marquetry Combs

A couple of combs I made last weekend and this weekend. The lotus flower was my second attempt. Learned a lot from my first attempt and even more from the second one. These were a lot of fun to make.

They are a gift for my partner who I have spent the last 10 years with on July 4. I’ve grown a lot over those 10 years thanks to her and hope to grow a lot more in the next 10 years (together I hope!!).
I was inspired by the wooden combs a friend on instagram makes @woodsimka check out her awesome work to see so much more.

Really nice work Ryan. The attention to detail in the backgrounds shows as does the excellent marquetry and shading. 👍👍👌

Beauties Ryan!
Love the way you splayed the backgrounds. What wood is that used for the comb?

What wood is that used for the comb?
I used rosewood for these 2 combs. I am going to play around with some others to see what works well and what looks good. The rosewood actually came from an old billiard table rail that we have cannibalized in our shop for small projects.
Well done! What a great idea for quick (and impressive) marquetry project! I may have to give that a go...

Yes! I hope you do, I would love to see your style and ideas. So far this was just like you said, a quick little fun project, mostly to work on my cutting technique. Who knew it would turn out to be this much fun to make! I have a couple more I am working on at the moment.
