Sliding Modular Display Shelf #9: Installation

I installed the shelf in my daughter’s house last week. I knew I had measured, and re-measured the wall and electrical panel the last time I was there, but it was still a great relief to see the mounting bracket fit the way I planned.

Installation was straightforward. I had to remove the drawer slides to mount the bracket, because the mounting screws on the left are behind the slides. I was able to screw into a stud on the left. On the right, I drilled the screw hole as far toward the corner as I could, but I didn’t hit a stud and had to resort to plastic wall anchors there.

Here’s the installed panel in its opened position. There’s plenty of room to access the electrical panel door and breakers. In this position, the levers that enable the two parts of each drawer slide to be separated are accessible from the back.

Here’s how it looks from the side. The slight concavity I mentioned in my previous blog post is not noticeable.

Here it is with one possible shelf/box configuration. My daughter hasn’t had time yet to decide on a final configuration and add plants or other items, but the project is now complete from my end. She and my son-in-law are very happy with the way the shelf looks and operates.

great way to hide an ugly electric panel.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Awesome work, Ron.  The panel looks very intentionally placed.  You'd never know what lurks behind it.
Great idea,

Did we see that before on LJ?

Thanks, guys.

Petey, I started this project after I stopped posting on LJ. If you saw something similar there, it wasn’t from me. I just spent a few minutes searching LJ to try to find a similar project and came up empty.
I like the chair rail, wood window, and crown detail in the room. Hiding that panel really classes the room up. Allows your eyes to be drawn the important details. Excellent work.
Thanks, Devin. It’s an older house made of better materials than most newer ones I’ve seen. I shudder at how much all that hardwood trim would cost these days.
Not much if you know where to buy it. You can also make it yourself out of whatever wood you like

That is a very attractive solution - nicely done!
