Awl

This is another Awl that I made from 7 layers of an unidentified material. When turned, the chips look like stringy cardboard, but it sands and polishes up very nicely. I  put a 1/2" wood dowel in the center of all the layers to insure stability of the material if the awl was dropped. all layers are epoxied together/
I turned the point from tool steel and hardened it, turned a solid brass ferrule and added a 44 Mag cartridge case in the back. It is finished with EEE and Shellawax..........................Cheers, Jim

Cool awl, the handle came out real nice. The addition of the cartridge case really makes it stand out. Great job !!!   Mike
As always, another useful and well-designed project.

So, I gather this is made from a composite that you put together? Could you share the process? I’m trying to understand how you made it.

Hi Ryan. I got this 3/8" material out of the dumpster where we pull  out high grade maple plywood. The guy that threw it in said you can't drive a nail in it ( but you can drill, cut ,rout and turn it with no problem). I cut 7 pieces about 1 5/8" square and glued up the stack with 5 minute epoxy. All except the top and bottom pieces had 1/2" hole drilled in them and were strung up on a 1/2" dowel before gluing the stack together.  Then I cut off the corners in the band saw and turned it round in the lathe. I drilled a hole for the steel point and turned the front round for the brass ferrule. I glued on the ferrule and  glued in the point and held it by the point to shape it and bore in the back  for the cartridge case.....................Cheers, Jim
