Project Information

i call this the stump table because i designed the base too sort of resemble a tree stump,at least that was my thought.this was something i did about 16 years ago,i just added the upper drawer that holds remote controls so i decided to post it.the base is made from 8/4 cherry, the strips down the front are padauk, not just for looks but to cover large screws that join the pieces together.bottom drawer is box jointed and just rides on wood, top drawer is on soft close glides.handle on bottom drawer i made from cherry.no handle on top.the slab top is oregon mrytle wood,2"x22"x58".many say bark needs to be removed because it will fall off, well as you can see thats a myth.the original finish was 3 coats of maloff poly oil blend, and i just added a fresh coat of general finishes gel top coat satin to brighten it up.the room is rather dark and the pic's dont show the chatoyance the wood has in sunlight.

Really nice slab there.  You did a nice job bringing up the chatoyance.

Good looking and functional, both in the same project.    Good work.   Like the wood and the finish.  Well done.

Nicely done, and the tabletop looks great, just to many remotes in that drawer.

Main Street to the Mountains

thanks ron.
thanks eric-i agree about the remotes. ive tried 2 or 3 of those universal ones but ive never found one that did everything well.

Myrtlewood is so unique. Nice slab - didn't realize the trees were that large.  For some reason I had a smaller branchy tree in my mind.
thanks barb.yeah they can get pretty big. my dad had a slab that twice the size as this one.

Man - it doesn't take long to fall behind on the project page!

A coffee table is a great idea for a slab. Lots of opportunities to appreciate it.

Nice work!
ha ha yeah with so many lj's transferring all their projects it's creating so many it's hard to keep up. eventually it will slow down though. although jim jakosh has over 1100 so he could keep it very busy for months-lol.

Beautifully done table. I would sure hate to crack my shins on it in the middle of the night, guessing it wouldn't move, looks heavy. Excellent job.  Mike
