Wooden Hinge (with box attached)

I really like the wooden hinge described here by Paul (shipwright). I made a stand-alone hinge just for the fun of it. Then I wanted to build something that uses such a hinge.  I decided on a good-sized box for my shop to hold wood screws and associated hardware.  My previous "system" could get pretty frustrating.

The box is made of ash with cherry for the lid and miter keys.  There are 12 compartments in the lower part of the box and a removable tray on top of that.  I rounded the exterior edges and corners more than I usually would for a box.  Since this box will be used in my shop, I wanted to made it less prone to damage from rough handling.

The overall outside dimensions are about 11" X 18" X 7".  I finished all the parts with Danish oil.

Here are some photos that I took during the build:

Thanks Paul!

Posted elsewhere Sep 1, 2012.  This box has served me well the past 10 years and the hinge is as good as new.

Thanks.

Eric - I suggest that you do play around with this idea.  It is well worth it!

Great looking box Chuck.
I’m happy to see the hinge getting picked up and yours looks great.

Paul, thanks for sharing. And yes, I am going to experiment with this. I have made wooden hinges in the past, and they are fun.

Neat hinge.   Compact and becomes part of the box rather than added on.

Chuck,

I love that hinge, too, and have used Paul's method on a couple of boxes.  I gifted them so I don't know how well they have held up, but from your experience, it gives me confidence that they are durable.

I love the box Chuck. That link is magical, thanks Chuck for posting, and Paul for sharing.

Thanks for the kind comments!
