Joiner’s mallet
Finally my first post on this website!
I originally wanted a simple mallet just like a stick + a chunk of wood that suits myself. As I was looking for inspiration online, I'm getting more influenced by shinny exotic mallets that people make and post on SNS and I ended up taking that route.
In addition, when I started to think about the design, I also saw the knife swap final products so I decided to make the handle style as a practice for me to make knives one day, maybe (It's just a simple sandwich).

- Mallet head: 5.25" x 2.75" x 2.25" (12oz)
- Handle: 8.5" (11.5" inc throu tenon)
- 8-9oz Bullhide Leather
- Finish: Mixed of Walnut Oil/Carunauba Wax/Beeswax
I'm not a hand tool guy but stick to hand tools ever since I started wood working last year to understand the basics of woodworking (and I can't afford big things!!). The only power tool I used was a drill driver because the decent woodworking brace seems to be too much.
Anyways, now I kind of understand why people make a lot of mallets! One is enough but it's just fun to make!

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Looks like a good mallet, YRTi. The one thing I don’t see that I’ve been doing with mine lately is angling the faces in ever so slightly (you may have done that, but I couldn’t see it). I find that makes me more likely to hit “square,” and it doesn’t take very much. I used a pine mallet made from tubafors as a test to get the angle right, since I could rapidly change the angle of the face with a rasp.

Dave - Thank you for the advice. There are lots things I don't know so comments from experienced people with advice are what I really appreciate:) For this mallet, I made actually made it square on purpose. Personally, I just feel it's more comfortable!

thats a fine well made mallet my friend. do you cringe every time you slam it down ?

Every one needs a tool like that to beat on things, really think your wood combo is great and doing the profiling by hand is a big +.
What did you use to attach the leather?
Your fingernails are perfectly manicured, you need more shop time to take chunks out and get that grizzled patina! 8^)

Splinter - I used hide glue to attach the leather. I don't even have a shop but if anyone will buy what I make, I can probably have a permission to increase my woodworking space and to spend more time on projects from my wife, haha! Thank you for the compliment:)
