Abdel Secret Grease Box

I had this picture of the old Abdel secret grease box ( from Mads project and designed by an old man named Abdel) on my workbench for quite a while and then I found a piece of Osage Orange left over from a project on the other bench. I put the two together and made this secret grease box with a few changes. I thought it would look better as a finished small treasure box and I changed the locking mechanism to a round brass pin that drops into the slide to lock it shut . You have to flip it and give it a tap to drop the pin back into the hole in the top to open the top. To secure it without fasteners showing, I used a brass pin in a blind hole in the top and bottom with a recess for a 4 penny nail to retain it into the bottom. I puttied the holes over so you can disassemble it if you really had to. The brass pin locks it shut until you turn it over to  drop the pin in the deeper hole in order to move the slide to open it.

Making one gets a person in the GBOC- Grease Box Owners Club !!

It is dry Osage Orange and finished with Deft gloss lacquer.

I like this box Jim, but I hate to admit, I'm not smart enough to understand how this works. I see all the pieces, but I still can't grasp it. Did you make the brass pieces?

.................. John D....................

Hi Awsum55. Yes I did make all the brass pieces.

Here is how it works. That very top piece has to swing out of the way to let that piece below it slide back out of the dove tail and swing clear of the grease pit in the bottom. That little round disc blocks the top piece from sliding back when the box is upright. So the trick is to turn the box upside down so the brass disc drops out o the locking hole in the top., Then you can swing it sideways and allow the second piece to slide back.

The original box like this designed by Abdel had a square piece of steel for the lock and used a square hole. I found the round hole and disc were a lot easier to make and do the same thing
