Hybrid Wheels

My friend that brings me all the Osage Orange wood from Iowa had the second set of wheels break on their laundry cart. Last year I made him 2 out of mesquite and the edges have chipped a little going through gravel with them. So when he brought me this broken set, I turned the plastic out of the centers and replaced them with Osage Orange centers. The rubber treads should hold up better than wood treads.

Wow! Osage Orange laundry cart wheels??? Lucky them!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

That is an interesting project Jim, and a good save. Should last better than the ones replaced. Well done.

Great fix/repair/upgrade Jim

It’s just ashamed the manufacturer don’t put quality wheels on the trolley’s in the first place.

Thank you all for the nice comments. These folks keep me busy with repairs of all kinds. Lucky we have a wood shop and  a lot of metal  working tools.

I enjoy practical repairs so this was a good one.
I think we have come to depend on plastic for too many things and in most cases you can't even glue it back together like you can wood. I can't count the number of appliance and equipment items that have broken plastic parts that can't be repaired.
Thanks, Les. I'm with you on that . I like to make new tools our of wood too and maybe use a steel end on the business end...but they last forever and don't break like plastic.
These original wheel had about 1/16" cross section with a few ribs and they did not take the pounding on gravel
