Oak Compass

I made this compass our of some left over red oak from a previous project. I don't usually like to turn oak because it is so porous, but it worked out fine. I made this for my shop in Arizona because I do a lot of radius work and many time the radius is bigger than my little steel compass will swing. I have 3 here at home and use them regularly.
This one is 11 1/2 long and will swing a 16" radius. I like to make curved handles cut into cutting boards and I need a radius for the center of the holes and raddii for tangents to the inside and outside of the holes and this makes easy work of it.

This one is red oak with brass fasteners and a hardened tool steel point . The side with the pencil is drilled in deep so I can get a long ย  pencil in there to start. It is finished with Danish Oil and buffed and waxed.

Looks a lot like one of my steel ones but way nicer Jim!

Nicely done. A classic.ย

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

None of my steel ones go past 6" My 24" steel ruler is full of tiny holes from when I need something bigger. I'll have to make something like your piece soon before my ruler runs out of steel ๐Ÿ™‚

Very nice Jim!ย

Looks great and the brass accents go good with the Oak.ย  Mike
Cool, lathe made is a change from a hand maid.

Hmmm, a compass... does it point in a pubs direction (SSE from my place)?

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Very finely crafted tool, great work on this. I especially like the pencil mounting, nicely done.
Great work, Jim! Iโ€™ve made a few different compasses. Still trying to dial in the right thickness on the legs so they donโ€™t flex, but arenโ€™t any bulkier than they need to be. If I ever find them all at once Iโ€™ll maybe post the herdโ€ฆ

May you have the day you deserve!

Nice job, that looks like a manufactured tool.

Thanks Mike, Alex, Oldtool,, Dave, Awesum55 , and Ron.
Hi Alex, whatever it points at it , it sticks into. The point is needle sharp and at 30 degrees.
Hi Dave. I've made several and I use between 5/8" and 3/4" for the legs..and try to get some time on the lathe with them.
I'll put my herd down in a future comment.
