All these busts are fantastic! Do you use a photo/sketch as a guide or just go from a mental image?
In the past I would just pick up a chainsaw and see what popped out. These days, I usually make a rough sketch and either hire a model, ask a friend or just look for a photo online. The last 10 years or so has been all commission work so I have to show sketches etcs to sell the idea. This is especially important with my public art pieces where I need to sell the concept to a committee. When working in steel, I do all of the above but I also make clay maquettes so I can work out t he shapes in an easier medium. When I created Adrielle (life sized figure in steel) I sketched the concept, as well as the hands, feet, face etc... I hired a model for it as well and made several sketches with her. I also made a clay face and foot first to give me somewhere to start from
