Drawing bow

wasn't sure what to call these. many times i wanted to draw an arch on a project but even my biggest compass wouldn't do it. so i made a couple of these. made from oak with hooks on each end and some light chain from lowes. bend to the size arch you want and hook the chain on the hook. one is 29" and the other is 46". a simple project that i made in about half an hour.

Looks like a parabola or maybe a hyperbola marker.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Oh I just cut an arch yesterday and I wish I knew this, haha. I will definitely make one!

No name noobie here

Nice! I have one that I bought that’s made of fiberglass. It’s a great tool to have for long curves!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

thanks guys. i made these a few years ago and ive used countless times. ive never seen any you could buy though ?

Lee Valley is where I got mine I think. They’re called Drawing Bows, if I remember correctly.

So your trying to say you're holding the patent on these?
Much handier than trying to find a bucket that matches the arch I need.
Those look really useful, Pottz.
well for small arches a bucket still does the job sometimes. i use these for big arches.

Cool - Nice idea with the chain links for the drawing bow.
You've got to call them chainsaws just to carry on the joke though, right?

Bow chain saw.  Duh.

Those look great P!

I've been trying to buy the LV bows for years, but every time I try due to free ship or other promotion, they are out-of-stock.

Tried making my own a time or two, but the wood I used always was not consistent enough for a truly smooth arch.
Since I've been using the laser lately for < 2' wide arches, I haven't really needed one.
I think the reason they’re fiberglass is so they’re consistent. I tried making them with wood, but it seems like you don’t get a perfectly uniform bend. Densities and whatnot…

i dont know the oak has given me a nice curve ? like i said i never even knew you could buy em !

Nice woodworking appliance, these type of self made "jigs" are very handy.
Great idea! I use the Lee Valley versions but they don't last forever.. the straps break, usually. I like the chain idea.

If these fail to yield a perfectly smooth curve (draw a line, flip it end for end, and see how close it comes to the line), you can sand/shave a bit of wood from the stiffer side.  Archers call this tillering a bow.

On the other hand, if you are looking for an asymmetric curve, exaggerate the effect by thinning the thinner side - think of it as a redneck French curve.

Huh? Whadaya mean it ain't "measure once cut twice"?

good idea mike, thanks !
