Guitar picks and a home

I havent posted any projects for a long time - because I havent made any for a long time.

My good American friend here had a birthday coming up, today, and since he is a guitar playing kind of guy, I thought I would attempt to make some guitar picks for him out of Ebony.  Ebony being a favored wood for picks, something to do with TONE, or whatever.  I just know it is dense wood, and unlikely to get knicked, like the plastic ones do.  And it is Black, and black is always cool if you Rock and Rule!

I roughed the shapes out on the newish bandsaw I just had to have, and was gonna use, like, everyday, and then didnt.  Then addressed the thicknesses on my DIY sanding station - a belt sander clamped on its side.  There is a bevel to them, thinnest at the tip, obviously.  And finally, tweaked the shape by hand sanding the edges.  They are all slightly different in thickness and shape.  Completed with an oil and waxing combo.  My guitar playing son tested them, and concluded they are decent enough.

Of course, being me, I couldnt just hand my friend some picks and say - Happy Birthday.  No, they needed a home too, to keep warm and cozy in, with a communist-red velvet blanket for extra comfort.  (There is irony there, in that last bit.  Did you catch it?)  Moreover, it couldnt be just any silly old box, it needed some flair!  So I put some flair - there.  Dimensions are 12cm X 6cm X 6cm, I think, with the aim that the box could fit into a hardcase for gigging and such other travels.  American walnut and Gabon ebony, as if you didnt know, already.

Astrologically speaking, my friend is a Cancer, and the birthstone for this Sign is Moonstone.  I just happened to have some of those in my stash of neat things to glue on boxes, so I put the purdiest one of those I had on top for a crown.

Thanks for viewing!
And have a great day!!!

Welcome back comrade!

You did well for the party by bring your skillful creation to the party!

Great to see you create such deceivingly not-so-simple shapes and then make a worthy container. Bling is your bonus trademark.
👍👍👍

like that a lot.   nicely done

Nice home for your picks, which are kinda hard to roll your own, or I've heard from a few pickers I know, and they also do woodworking. Something about trying to hold a gnat, while also keeping it close to a running sander, fingertips gone, stuff like that. Anyhow nice job, look forward to seeing more of your work again.
Nicely done!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Well done, good work, like the design

Simply beautiful Brian!   I use the term 'claret' for the velvet...............  I've recently found an amazing range of cabochons.  And metal stickers (phone stickers) on Ali Express - worth exploring for Japanese boxes  - carp, dragons and tigers which can be stuck onto a finished surface and then varnished/polyurethaned over to build up a surface.
Thanks, Martin.  And thanks for the tip, those metallic stickers sound very interesting - will check that out.

Brian, have you (or anyone here) ever used the sheets of Abaione for your work?
You mean Abalone shell, Splint?  (yeah, I checked the link now)

I have some small pieces, and bought a jewelers saw to cut it - but havent tried using it for inlays yet.  I am pretty sure Martin (Madburg) could give you some tips with that if you PM him.

Also guitar makers use it for frets inlays and more, so there are prolly tons of youtubes for that.  The little dots you can get in various diams would certainly add some flair to just about anything.

The really good quality stuff can get pricey.

Thanks Brian 👍

Yeah, typo. I was thinking of lasering out shapes. I know they make stuff that will work, really just thinking about if it tends to burn up or is really fragile, etc.
