Master Music Stand

I have a musician friend who asked that i create an elaborate music stand to match his rocking chair that he sits in and plays his trumpet. I tried building this without steam bending wood, because i've never done that! Well instead of bending, it was breaking! I ended up drawing it out in full scale, building a form for the steamed wood and building a steam box to steam bend it. This was an awesome challenge but one that i found VERY rewarding! My client said it gave her goose bumps! You just can't beat that!

Beautiful! Very delicate looking. How’s it’s finished?

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

That is absolutely first class!!
Nicely done, plus a new skill!

May you have the day you deserve!

The nicest looking music stand I have ever seen, and you learned a new skill, and how wonderful to have given another person goosebumps. Winner winner. Very nice build.
Beautifully done!
Love the back story about this making you learn a new WWing skill! Something that adds a new dimension for future creativity.

Really beautiful!
Thank you guys so much! I finished it with General finishes hard wax oil. I wiped it on and within 5 minutes you wipe if off. I put several coats on it. It immediately looked awesome.

That is a WOW design and build.  I love it.

If you decide to do more steam bending, look into using a strap clamp.  Lee Valley sells one but I just made my own with some metal flashing with some wood blocks screwed to it.  It really helps to reduce the chances of it breaking as you bend it.

Just echoing the other comments - that is an elegant and beautiful music stand.  Great photos, too!
When i bent the base, i did use a strap clamp and a neighbor came to my rescue to pull that strap while i clamped it all up. It was very daunting! First to build the steam box, but then to build the forms! Sleepless nights of just thinking about how to make it. I made it double the size and cut it down the middle to "butterfly" the top. So glad you all like it!
