I made this box for my Veritas Medium Shoulder Plane 6 -7 years ago. I milled the cavities for extra knobs and the plane. I installed some rare earth magnets to keep the lid closed. It has brass hinges. On the front face there's a little semi circular recess to place your thumb when opening the lid.
It appears the box has 3 pieces: the lid, the main compartment and a glued on bottom. Correct? I can see several ways to accomplish this: milled out by hand using a using drill, coping saw and files, scroll saw, router and various chisels.
GeorgeWest Nice storage Rick. What was your process for outlining, and milling out the detents for everything?
Thanks George. The top half is made of 1"x 8" pine finished at 1/2" thick and the bottom half is made of 2"x 8" pine that is cut into 2 pcs. One which is the absolute bottom is finished at ~ 1/2" thick and Second is the cavity body ~ 3/4" thick ( this has to equal to or greater than the plane body thickness) I traced the plane and knobs shape onto this piece and then scroll sawed them out. Afterwards I laminated these two pieces to make a completed bottom. (When I cut these two pieces I used a thin kerf blade, grain matched, and dressed to perfection)You can't even see the line. It looks like it was milled on a CNC.
987Ron Like it! I would need a label on the front to remind me what was inside.
Thanks Ron! I deliberately do not label. I don't want anyone to really know what's in them. I know each box shape and what's in them. After a while it becomes easy.
Rick, Both of those planes come in handy at times. Never have used the Detail Rabbit Plane. Those Veritas planes are the best.
Lee Valley's detail rabbet plane is one of the best little tools ever. So handy that I often just kept it in one of my apron pockets. It quickly breaks board edges. It's great for tidying grooves when making doors for cabinetry. It's small enough to tidy any corner to 90°. It fantastic at finessing controlled cuts in areas you could ordinarily trim only with a chisel. With very narrow soles, they are also useful for cleaning dados. I agree. Lee Valley Veritas planes are top of the line.
Jim Jakosh Very nice custom fit box! I need to make one for my Henry Golden Boy because it will not fit in any gun case with the big scope on it.
Thanks Jim. Once upon a time I used to make gun cases. Besides being a hunter back then, I also was a trap shooter, loaded my own shot shells, always in turkey shoot outs. I've made many a custom rifle, shot gun, and pistol case in the past. Lots of fun!! Very rewarding.
MrRick commented about 1 hour ago new LBD.... your box certainly looks functional. That's the main thing. I like the sliding lid. Have you ever tried using foam inserts to hold the parts?
Those were done about 15 years ago... when I didn't have a phobia against hand tools... just kidding... it's deeper than phobia. Lately most of my boxes have morphed into laser cut MDF (profiled) with flock or laser cut felt.
OOPS, looks like I've dobbed myself in about still having handtools... however, I still have the phobia.
If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD
Duckie.... why the hand tool phobia? You drop a chisel on your foot? Lol. I like your veritas honing guide box. Similar to mine except mine was done with hand tools and muy dovetails!
