Swallowtail Joint

Here once again, I'm practicing a swallowtail joint with cedar and pine. Done with handtools only.  It's quite attractive but difficult to do. Especially doing four corners of a box.

Cheers!

Never seen that before, neat!
Looks like with proper planning there is no extra tricky chisel work over a regular DT, just additional baselines to work to.

This is a slippery slope Rick! Next thing you know you will be cutting those intricate Japanese joints :)

BTW, it looks great.
Definitely beyond me!  Interesting for sure.
Barb, you don’t give yourself enough credit! Look up how to do it, it’s very do-able.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

yeah looks pretty cool, but more work than id wanna do.

It's harder to do than regular dovetails with almost twice the surface area to cut. You have to be precise all the way with your chisels. Any gaps in your joint will be noticeable. Planning as you say is crucial along with good sharp chisels and execution. Here's another one I did slightly different. I found it easier to do.

Thanks Steve!  Funny you should say this. It's been on my mind for a while to try some intricate Japanese joinery. For a while I've even thought about buying some Japanese chisels to do it. I don't know anyone who has them and been wondering if they're better. Also don't know what kind would be better.
Interesting joints.

Wow, that is one complicated joint, but you seem to have mastered it. Nice tight fit, no gaps at all, great work.  👍

Barb.... maybe you should give it a try. Just take your time. Each time you do any type of dovetails it gets better because you learn personal techniques that work for you.
That is very cool..Your own design?

Have you retired yet? When you do you'll have plenty of time to try it! 😉

Thanks Oldtool! It does take a good amount of effort and not for the faint of heart. That's for sure!

No... Jim. It's not my idea. I saw a photo of it long ago when researching dovetails on the web.  Then I wondered if I could do it. Not having details, I developed my own dimensions and approach and tried it.
That is a cool joint.

That is a cool joint.

Thanks Petey. Glad you like it.
That is a really nice looking joint Rick.  It's like you were cutting dovetails and said "this is way too easy, how can I spice it up?"  😉
Very cool Rick, new to me. The first dovetail I tried came out so good, I never tried to make another. 😂 That design looks like it would make a box stand out among hundreds of boxes. Nice job.
