Baby Rattles

Well when you get a new great grand baby, you have the opportunity to make more things in the shop. I had to make Miles his own rattle and while I was at it, I made a few extra to give away for friends' babies!! After cutting the blanks and boring the pockets for the steel balls, I had McKinlee over for the day and she helped by putting 8 balls in each rattle and then spread the glue evenly just before I clamped them together. I personalized this one for Miles!! They are just 3 stage buffed and waxed with Carnuba wax.

The 2 on the left are pecan and the two on the right are cherry. I also made 2 out of birdseye maple but the first one I turned had a lot of pockets in it from bug tracks. I blasted all the dust out of the pockets and I'm debating on leaving  it with all those tracks for character or filling them with a contrasting color filler. I think by filling it, I might be taking a risk of some of it coming out when a baby has it and that would not be good. A food safe colorant of a contrasting color might be another option while leaving the tracks open!! What do you think??

Cheers, Jim

NIce looking noise makers.  Baby will love it.  Well done.   Have no input on the Maple.

Nice

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Nice rattles Jim. I usually use shellac burn in sticks for my fills, and on stuff that lies around, or even gets stuff piled up on it, I've never had issue with  it coming out, BUT then again I have never put metal balls inside something, and given it to a toddler either. If something can get destroyed, a small child can get the job done. Maybe just let Mom know there is a fill material, and if she gets any leakage, send it back to you for repair?

That BE is wormy, I wonder if it was on the ground a while before it got processed?

Did you get a result on the site problem? I've looked at it a few times, and I can't figure it out?
First, congratulations great grandpa. The rattles are a great project for the new addition to the family. If your great grandchild is like most babies, everything goes straight to the mouth, I'd be careful about the wormy one.
Thank you all for the nice comments. I think I'll scrap the  birds eye rattles! I still have 3 more to give away!

Nice work, Jim.

The birdseye… I would fill with epoxy, which is food-safe when cured, though it’s still plastic. Then I’d give it a test, shaking it, banging it on stuff, etc. and see how well it held up. But probably not for giving to kids for version 1.0.

May you have the day you deserve!

Thanks, Dave. I'm throwing the birdseye ones away. I don't like the looks of them anyway. Cherry or any tight grained wood looks s whole lot better. I went to the wood room to get wood for them and the birdseys said " pick me, pick me" and I should not have!!!!!!!!!Someday they have me on the loony farm for listening to the wood!!!!!
