It’s been a while since I posted here, however, with all the short narrated projects, I thought it was time to give all you insomniacs some respite and an excuse/remedy to get some Zzzzz’s.
I was inspired by recycle 1943’s posts about making up some PSI Lever Action pen Kits(… and if that link fails for political reasons, here are a few of his creations,
After reading (UGH!!), I quizzed him about the gun stocks he fabricated as the ones supplied in the kits were poopsie and PSI’s suggestion in making it out of wood was poopsier,
Fortunately recycle obliged and gave me a great run down on how he made it which inspired me to take up the challenge.
Not having firearms in Aussieland, I did some surfing for gun stocks and came up with this initial design in SketchUp,
which I dumbed down a bit for easier fabrication, to fit the kits body,
and “wrap over” the lever.
Without getting into the kit specifics at the moment, I laser cut and laminated 2 x 6mm profiles out of MDF,
I designed a drilling template for the stock end to attach to the rifle’s body by tracing around the supplied metal stock perimeter,
Then it was a case of using my Foredom to shape the stock using these burr attachments,
to finish up with,
Unfortunately the fit was not too flush with the body so it was time for take two.
The threaded spindle on the end of the body (for stock attachment) was 6mm (M6), so I cut 2 forms out of 3mm MDF and one out of 6mm MDF that had a recess for the stub,
which removed the need for drilling… well I thought I was clever, dexterously patted myself on the back and had a celebratory cask-o-vino. Tested the fit,
and was gruntled.
Time to go into production… called upon some of my BOOMBY.
Cut a blank and measured up for the tube for the forestock,
prepared some other milled BOOMBY and used a laser cut profile of the stock out of 3mm MDF as a tracing template,
Used a “corner jig” to align and CA glue the drilling profile to the end of the blank,
The PDF to print and glue (rather than laser cut) the profiles will be available in my cloud storage linked further below.
While the blank was still large an manageable, I clamped it and drilled the hole on my drill press,
The more observant of yazall may have detected that I created a new drilling profile [1] (and an insert into the old ones [2]),
so I could use the 1mm dia. hole to align the tip of my brad drill bits.
Cut a spare tube just in case I cock up,
and cut another blank for the tube,
Then it was back to the DP to drill the tube hole, CA glue in the tube, and ream both the blank’s ends flush with the tube,
Turning the front stock was just a routine pen making exercise, however, shaping the stock raised the degree of difficulty a tad as it was no longer just out of MDF.
Using my scroll saw,
I cut along the template’s outline to get the rough stock shape. Initially shaped the stock with my burr infested Foredom,
aided by a few different sized rat’s tail files,
and plenty of labour intensive hand sanding
… didn’t get/need as much assistance form my spindle sander,
as I thought I might…I only use if for the wide end of the stock… that burr on the Foredom worked like magic and did most of the work… I just sat back and watched.
A quick “brush” up on the flap sander (240G on the RHS),
smoothed out a few sanding wrinkles.
Being a weird shape the stock was polished on my Beallbuffing system… mounted on a slow speed grinder with the carnauba wax finish on my mini lathe,
… no other finish used.
I initially started the frontstock with the standard pen turning/sanding/finishing method, however, I had to tone it down to keep pace with the buffed stock. After sanding to 600G and a quick pass of U-Beaut EEE it was over to the buffer for the traditional Beall3 wax regime.
Then it was time to assemble the rifle pen. If anyone attempts this little beauty, watch the orientation of the “tip nut”,
it only fits the tip from one end. The instructions do state to fit the nut to the tip before assembly, but being a typical mucho male, only wusses RTFM, and I fitted it the wrong way only to find I couldn’t screw the tip in.
I had to disassemble it and unfortunately during the process the claw spanner I used slipped of the padding and marred the body of the pen,
ruining the pen kit. Fortunately my purchase had 2 pewter finish pens so I could substitute the other and reserve this scarred rifle for my marketing/sample display.
Something else I didn’t plan for was the overall length… because of the customised stock, mine came in at 190mm long… just a minute 50mm longer than any box I have.
Rather than fabricate one to fit and hide the rifle, I thought about all those firearms hanging on the wall of the old Western movies and decided to hang it on a backing board with some horizontal mounts.
Prototyped some laser cut MDF mounts,
on a piece of hardwood.
Ferreted through my different BOOMBY/OGWOOFY piles, I found a contrasting piece for the backing and milled some stock down to 4mm to make 2 mounts. The mounts were lined with 4mm wide strips of leather from the compliments of a very expensive torn lounge suite,
and finally mounted,
If you got this far, thanks for looking, and if you didn’t, you won’t know about this cloud storage link, to download the templates,
(and more).

ok right off im gonna just say, no i ddin't read everything, nor will i ...................ever !!!!! so just tell me, what pen kit did you use and i wont waste yours or anyones time !!!! 😁 or pm me and spare the regulars the aggravation ! 🤣😎
working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Would have thought with retirement you'd learn to read and not get W' to read you "Good Night Little One" in bed so you can get to sleep.
Surely you could have read the first 3 lines (4 lines if you include the greeting) in the thread that is in your face for,
Damn, I hope your BBQ swap partner posts you a video on how to flip the ring on a can of beer, in case you refuse to read the "how to open" on the side.
.Thanks eRasmus... it is a bloody long pen that exceeds the capacity of my largest pen holder by 50mm.
I put one of recycle's pictures through Mathias Wandel's big printprogram, and put in the front stock's measurement of 62mm, which when processed the image, and returned 67.8mm, ... I compromised at 50mm... but still pokes me in the eye if I put it in a top shirt/nightie pocket

T'would be interesting lugging that iron through airport security, but then again they'd probably allow it through but force you to toss your sandwich...
Nice writeup as usual, never seen the full process before. I see a new Shaper Origin hiding in the background there, are you getting busy with it?
Nice job Duckie!! That's some tiny work...keep your fingers safe! Super work...I am jealous....but it is timber, not the prized acrylic....but then again acrylic might look silly on a rifle...and speaking of rifles, don't they take your guns away in AUS? Better watch out for the Feds.....
Here I was thinking I had the smallest circular saw in existence only to be outdone by The Duck! A neat piece of gear for doing flooring repairs But not to be outdone I have a working drill almost as old as me! Pay particular attention to the serial number! 113457 The 57 relates to the manufacture date of the drill! ...68 Years old. Hasnt drooped yet!
Bloody keyed chuck! Lose the key and you're back to a hammer and round chisel or a gun (pen) to make the holes... however, if you have the key around your neck or an effigy tattooed to your hand, I can rent you my mobile crane, to help you lift it.
Put a crosscut blade in my Dremel and your monster in the hands of Andre The Giant will make him reach for the spinach.
Moke .... timber, not the prized acrylic....but then again acrylic might look silly on a rifle...
Philistine… mine is made out of BOOMBY… If you can plant a plastic bottle in you garden and grow an acrylic tree, harvest it and turn a blank from it, I will forever embrace your plastic views.
Then again if you put a plastic camo on a rifle pen, it would be hard for people to see
and if the camo is good enough… sorry, a tad hard to see?
I'll put some light on it... 𝕧𝕠𝕚𝕝𝕒,

Well you can reasonably say they were not the soft junk bolts and screws we get fed these days
There are 18,000 metal parts that make up the Eiffel Tower, held together by 13,000 bolts and 2.5 million rivets I sent Gustave a email posing my/your question but have had no answer just yet, ... stand by
