I had a top day with one of the grandsons in the shed during the recent school holidays.
He got to use the Dewalt thicknesser, the Hegner table saw, the Bosch SCMS, the Makita trim router, the Hegner finger jointer and the Bosch sanders of course; most of which he's not allowed to use in the school classroom..
The box is 13" [330mm] x 9" [230mm] x 7.5" [80mm] high and made using offcuts from a local furniture maker in Penrith, Living Timbers.
He seemed very pleased with his efforts and yes, he’s done a good job of it and wanted to leave it as natural timber, beautiful Aussie Hardwood..

No such thing as scrap wood, just offcuts awaiting a project

damn man i guess the woodshop teacher even wanted me to do what  your grandson did ! spectacular work crowie !!!!
here in the states shop classes are all but gone !it's sad that kids like your grandson dont get to experience this ! give that young man a big hug and take him out for ice cram and a movie or i shall will !!!

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

He enjoys his woodworking classes at school but only 2-4 students in the class of 25 are truly interested in the woodwork.
That makes it very difficult for the teacher having over 20 students who don’t want to be in the class.

Time spent together  priceless. Greta project!

Well I can relate to not stretching kids from my sons Scout days when they couldn't use matches or pocket knives.
I am not sure how old the grandson is but assume High school age.
That being the case there is no reason to not "trade or competency  test" them under supervision if they have the shills and interest to learn.
Lets learn under a training situation rather than  in "combat" so to speak.
For Example
I learnt to drive an APC in the transport yard doing FWD and REV maneuvering and at that stage I think I only had a motorcycle licence.

I took my son canyoning at a familiar spot in the Blue mountains at an early age.

Fantastic day in the shop crowie, as majuvla said, time spent together with family is always great, especially with the younger ones. You create a bond and memories the grandson will have for a lifetime. Sweet!
A real win win - the shop time together and a great project outcome.
Well done, Peter!

May you have the day you deserve!

Great for you, for doing and enjoyment. A time that will be memories for him and learning beyond school.
Beyond great!

Ron

Great job by both of you. It’s obvious that he had good instruction, and equally obvious that he followed it and has skill, aptitude, and attention to detail of his own.
Nicely done!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

What did he succeed in teaching you crowie?

He must be a Holden person... cannot see a Ford logo!

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Some of my favorite shop time is with the grandkids!
That's a well-done box! Your grandson should be proud.

The Other Steven

Amen to Steve R., our grandkids love coming over to do projects in Grandpa and Yonda's wood shop.  Some of our best memories come from time is spent with them in the wood shop.  GREAT job Crowie, your grandkids will always treasure the time spent with you in the shop and the things you make together will be treasured forever.  One suggestion, make sure you and he initial & date the box on the bottom or someplace.

Thank you ladies & gents for the support and encouragement, it was a beaut day.
This grandson is 14 in year 9 at high school and absolutely 💯 he did a top job making the box.

Always a great day.  Spending time with kids is the single most important gift we can give.

My wife's worst nightmare - the granddaughter walking in, taking my hand and asking "Grandpa, are we going fishing or are we going to your shop to make something?"   You could see the steam coming from her ears.
