Porsche Crest Box

Friend has new Porsche, so a new box for him.   Similar to others except used the Porsche Crest (as on the front trunk lid) instead of a wheel cap.
Jatoba wood 1/2" thick walls and top.   Box is 6" x 6" x 4 1/4"   Top is slanted on the sides leaving a 2 3/4' x 3" area for the crest.  Taper on the lid was cut on the table saw.   The crest is inset 3/32" as the crest is fairly thick and having only protrude 1/16" seemed about right.   The lid is cut 1/8"on the bottom to set on to the base of the box.   Cut a template from mdf to guide the router for the inset.  Cleaned the corners with chisel.
The splines are 3 wood glued together to make a spline.  Ebony, Redheart, Yellowheart.   The German Flag colors.
Box base has mitered corners with a cork bottom.
The finish is Poly.
Simple box.
Made several gearhead boxes using wheel caps or crests.

Looks great Ron!
Good place for the keys!
Porsche ignition keys or modern fobs.    Quiz::  Know why the Ignition key or fob on a Porsche is always on the left side of the dash, left of the steering wheel?

i think has something to do with racing very kewl box GR8 JOB 😎😍👍

*TONY ** Denver * ALWAYS REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN

If I remember correctly, races uses to start with drivers outside the car, with the car off. So at the gun they could jump in, push the clutch with the left foot, gas with the right, put the car in gear with their right hand and start it with their left hand basically almost all at once…definitely race related…

Awesome box too! The splines are a great touch.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Nice box Ron, like the splines on the corners.

At least if you forget your rego, you'll recognise your jalopy by the missing crest on the front lid.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

well done and a great gift ron.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

That's a real nice box!

The Other Steven

Ryan you got it.   In the past the 24 HR Le Mans race.   The cars were on one side of the track, engines off.   Hand brake on or in gear to keep them from rolling off.   The drivers stood on the other side of the track.   Flag drop to start the race drivers sprinted across to their car jumped in, .started the car and took.off.    Now this was before seat belts and electronic communication between driver and pit crew.
Dr. Porsche had the driver have the key in.his left hand starting the car (was in neutral) while the feet and right hand released the hand brake and shifted the car into gear.   Thereby gaining  a few seconds on.their competitors.   Usually meant getting out ahead of several cars.
So today the key/fob is on the left as Tradition!

And thanks all for the comments.

Great box Ron. I like the splines. How did you cut the template for the crest and where did you get the crest?

James McIntyre

Template was made by tracing the crest onto.the mdf.  Scroll saw removing the waste close to the edge.   Then sanding it to final shape.
The crest was purchased on ebay, if I remember right.    Have also got wheel caps and crest from the service manager at the dealer.   Gave him a pen early on and later a box,  He is a friend.    He got them from repair scraps in.the body shop.
Hood crest of various makes can be found on ebay, amazon, body shops etc.  There are cheap plastic fakes around also.

What a beautiful and thoughtful gift!

For the lid taper (which is a great feature) - how did you set that up? I'm assuming a jig so it could be run through on edge? With that size, interested in how you secured it.
Clamped on edge to a longer board and passed thru the saw, longer board against the fence.  Blade set at needed angle.   Unclamp, rotate lid do it again,  slight adjustments needed on the sides that would be above and below crest.

Thanks for the comments
