Four Maple Bowls

This spring a big  branch broke off the maple  tree in my daughter's back yard and took off the corner of the neighbor's garage. I went over to cut it up and brought home 5 blanks that I roughed into bowls. They have been sitting in buckets of their own chips for  five months so I pulled them our and finished them last week. One was too punky so I pitched it.
They are finished with Danish oil and 3 stage buffed and waxed. She can keep them or re-gift them!!

Nice looking bowls, and free wood is also good. Not so good for the neighbor, though, eh?

nice bowl work jim.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

good looking bowls from free wood, what could be better.   well done

Nice, Jim! Also nice to see that I’m not the only one who sometimes has trouble with a little punky end-grain. That shortest one with the sides curved in would have had me spending hours with CA glue firming it up so I could get a smooth side, and 95% of people would never notice.

May you have the day you deserve!

Cool work Jim!
You should grab the tree bits too. Great the neighbor let you cut up the debris, but busted up garage bits often contain nails 🤠
Thanks you all for the nice comments. I did it just to get time on the wood lathe. I would not want to get rusty!!

Hi Dave. The tree branch was hollow ( rotten) in the center. The wind easily broke it off. I had one bow that was too close to that rotten area and I did not want to put about a half gallon of epoxy on it to solidify it. These are not real pretty bowls.......... just a memory of that storm!!

Hi Bruce. All I cut up was all the branches in my daughter's yard. There was  still about a 12" diameter piece between his garage and the fence that was partially flattened. No way I could handle that. I cut the part that was about  8" and smaller.

Very nice!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thanks, Ryan!

Nice job on the bowls! I've got a holly branch that I should try to save in this way.
Thanks, Steve. rough out that Holly wood and stick it in the chips that come from the rough turn!

These are very nice looking bowls, maybe the neighbor with the damaged garage might like a souvenir of the even, assuming they realize it was an unforseen accident & are still speaking with your daughter of course.
Can't unsee that old rustic look.

Thanks Tom and Ivan!!!

Hi Tom, that would be a good idea. I'll have  to see if he got the roof fixed yet.
