Whirly Bird

I met this couple in a woodworking booth at the Alto car show and they asked me if I could build a replacement bird for on top of their mailbox post. I said I could do it sometime and gave him my card. Well he came over yesterday with his well worn bird with a damaged wing and I cut him a new one last night. I bushed the wings with brass and put an aluminum shaft through the bird so you can fully tighten the screws without the wings binding. I put an aluminum  shaft,  with steps turned it ,to mount the bird on so it would never sit low enough to have the wings hit the post
The body is cedar and the wings are treated pine. I made a quick and dirty  fixture to hold the wings at 21 degrees on the band saw that worked really well. It is unfinished- he will paint it.

If you're going to make one you might as well do it right!
It looks good Jim.  I like birds. Nice way to cut the 21* on the band saw. 👍

James McIntyre

Nice way to make new friends. Maybe someday he'll be able to return a favor.

Bloody cheat JJ HH (Hueghsey).... love the way you offset that prop,

would never lift off a plane but gave the DODO wings.... great hint/tip!

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Thank you all for the nice comments! He was in no hurry, but when I get a project in my shop for someone else, I try to get it out as soon as possible because there are 5 more going on all the time  in there!!

Hi Ducky, I was going to set up the mill and cut the 21 degree with a long end mill, but this tapered block was whole lot quicker. They are counter rotating wings so I cut one on one end of the block and the other on on the opposite end- There  are 2 dowel holes in the angled block

I sure wish I could think like you do Jim. I would have never gone that way, I'm jealous of your talents.
