Spec Rack

Needed a better place to put my specs than on top of the walnut tool chest I made awhile back. Kept knocking them off. The sunglasses were put on top of the coat rack I built earlier. A lot of times when I went to put them up or take them off the shelf, I'd drop them. Those lenses come out easier than they go in, I can assure you!

This curly maple has been in my possession for many years. I was buying propane at the local Do-It Center and wandered over to the wood. Spotted it and bought it all. About 1/3 the price of the boutique wood stores- a 1/4" X 3" X 2' was only $3.

The shelves are in blind dadoes. My first try, I didn't have the sides clamped to jigs, and got some wavy dadoes. Had to make new sides.
The lighting in the shop washes out the figure, so I turned it 90° so the rest of it can be seen.

Beautiful wood Dark_Lightning. And the storage shelf looks great.
Where did you buy the curly maple. They probably didn’t know what it was worth.
What size is it!

James McIntyre

Those places that sell s4s wood (home centers) often have treasures in their stack that Joe DIY often passes up due to those "defects" and the wood guys don't shop their.

Score!

Looks great, what are the dimensions?
Nice! And having glasses handy will make viewing the curly maple even better. 🧐🙂
Huh, none of the small local hardware stores near me (ACE is one) have anything that nice in the wood area.
Looks really good.

The Lowes and HDs in the area are always great when they get new shipments (first come, first...)

Usually ambrosia and curly maple are the most common IME.
Thanks, folks! Yeah, I should have included the size. It's 10.6x" X 8". The shelves are 1/4" thick, the side and top are about .6". I had to sand past the tear out. Started at 3/4" thick.
Got the wood at a local Do-It center, Splint. I scored the butt end of an 8/4 X 8" wide X 5' long black walnut that has insane grain in it. I plan to make a stock for my k1022t Ruger with the bull barrel. That's in queue. Probably in about 5 years. 🙄

5 years isn't toooo bad Steven. I have an old BSA Martini Cadet (single shot .22 with the falling block action) I need to get to!
That wood really stands out.   Nice rack.

Ron

Thanks Ron. I got really lucky in spotting it when I did. It's ~ $48/Lb Ft at the price I paid, and triple that at the boutiques. And a lot of times there's hardly an figure.

4 layers.., is that where they get the saying "four eyes"?

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

If the layers are chickens, possibly.

Two typos-- I used Lb Ft instead of Bd Ft, and left the "y" off of "any". 🤷‍♂️

48 bucks a bd ft ! i gotta see what hudson wants. sounds high even for socal ?

It's those little pieces of lumber that bite you in the ass. I've seen Mahogany at the BORG for $20 a Bd Ft, but less than half of that at the real wood stores I go to. FWIW, I went to the blue BORG for a piece of oak- 1/2" X 6", X 4' long. $22, which is exactly $22/ Bd Ft. (Didn't buy it.) That, I can buy for 1/3 the price at the same real wood store I go to. People go to those stores because they just don't know any better. I'll readily admit to getting bit, myself. I bought a piece of beautifully rayed and flaked QSWO at the Rockler store in Torrance, many years ago. I needed it for a project, so I bit the bullet and bought it. It worked out to $75/ Bd Ft. I was not happy, but I had to have it.

well that rockler store is no more !!! same with the pasadena store, no more !

That's a first class rack DL!
Thanks, Steve!
Pottz, I went to the Rockler in Pasadena when my youngest son took a woods class in Junior High, to get him some knives. He's never done anything with them. I used to work about 5 miles from the Rockler store in Torrance. Gone. Next in line was the Woodcraft in Ventura. They folded a couple of years ago. Such is life.

Nice rack! I need a few.
I keep my glasses all over the house, that's why I can't find them.

the rockler in torrance was always busy it seemed, so i wonder why the closure ?
