It's a toy sailing boat on top of a big lump of wood....

I got asked by a Navy mate to made a Perpetual Trophy for the "Seniors/Veterans" who sail in the " RS AERO7" sail boat races...

I was given some photos of another trophy plus some photos & measurement of a "RS AERO7" then let loose.

The local bespoked furniture manufacture, Living Timber at Penrith had just done a beautiful big dining table using recycled Turpentine salvaged from an old Sydney Wharf.

I was lucky enough to score the "offcuts" as I thought what would be more appropriate than making the trophy and sailboat from an old wharf.

I also scored from Living Timber's offcut bin some American Oak and some Spotted Gum pieces which I've put to good use.

The base is Spotted Gum.
The walls are American Oak.
The top is Turpentine.
The sailboat is Turpentine with Walnut keel, gunnels and mast.
The sail is African Sapelli.
The finish is 4-5 coats of my homemade "wipe-on-poly" sanded between coats.
The inside of the trophy box is hollow so I've added a little explanation of the build [partly tongue in cheek].
The trophy is 20" [500mm] long x 12" [300mm] deep x 7" [190mm] high.
The sail boat is 12" [310mm] x 3.5" [90mm] with the sail at 18" [450mm] high.

The font of the trophy walls will have a descriptive plaque added then smaller shields added around it over the years.

A fun project using my toymaking and engineering scaling skills.

Oh, I forgot to mention that their is the possibilities of a "bottle of rum" being adding into the trophy box for opening at the ten year anniversary of the competition.

Quite nice Crowie, I like the mixture of woods.
So nice! The use of the various wood types, especially the salvaged wharf, adds a specialness to the outcome.
Very special project for great people.   Perfection on the build.   Hope you get to taste the rum in 10 years.

Ron

Sweet sailing dinghy Peter! Lots of detail and effort.
Thanks folks for the kind words of encouragement.
For what looks relatively simple box, it stretched me, I the end result turned out pretty good.
This is especially rewarding for a Navy Muppet Stoker.

Well done Crowie, you should be very proud of what you have produced, and you have given us a little bit of navy terminology.
