A project I did some time ago. It was stretched out over several months, hopefully to restrict any warping.
The project started with a 9 inch square 2 inch thick piece of Canary wood. The idea was to make a dish shaped jewelry container that necklaces could lay in and not tangle, all out ot the same blank so all grain would match..
The blank was cut close to round on the band saw then mounted on the Delta Mini Lathe. Turned to 8 inches and started to cut into 2 disk each about the same thickness. The almost cut into piece was sat aside for a period to make sure it was not going to warp.
Finally the two sides were seperated and the bottom turned to have concave ring, this being 3/4" deep.
The middle was then also made into a depression or cup also 3/4" deep.. The outside edge grooved to take the lid.
Top half, the lid, was turned giving the small piece in the center to make the inside lid for the center cup.
The top was grooved to fit the bottom.
Finished product is 8" in diameter, 1 3/4" tall. Wall thickness 1/4" Inside diameter 7 1/2" center cup is 2 3/8" diameter.
The ring and cup both 5/8" deep.
The underside is donut shaped with a depression in the center. No reason just seemed right at the time.
Lots of sanding and finished (forgot what finish was used). Later waxed and polished.
Turned out as intended better than expected. Thankfully the box kept its shape over time.
It is now about 4 to 5 years from time of turning.
This was given to Jeanine, my wife.
