I recently bought a Frank Lloyd Wright Barrel Chair built in the late eighties. I didn’t care for the color of seat it came with so I built a new seat and had it upholstered by Glenn Quezada he used the same piece of leather he upholstered the Sam Maloof recliner chair.
Glenn worked with Sam Maloof, Thomas Moser and others to upholster their chairs. This was his first Frank Lloyd Wright chair. His company is called GQ Interiors.
I cut the circles out on the band saw with a circle cutting jig and glued the two circles together.
I came up with this build and headed to the upholsterer.
Here’s what the original cushion looks like.
I
I saved the old cushion in case I sell the chair. It still has the old manufacturer label on it. Glenn and I hit it off. He’s a great furniture builder and upholsterer. Now the black leather on the seat matches the black leather on our living room furniture.
I think I gave this chair new life but saved its original design.
This chair was built by the Italian classic furniture company Cassina, a furniture maker who still holds the rights to make these chairs. Thanks for stopping by and viewing my project.
Lucky you rubbed out that compass line... it might have convinced your circle cutter you didn't trust it.
..... Glenn worked with Sam Maloof, Thomas Moser and others to upholster their chairs.....
Hell, even I might have worked for Sam and the boys, if it wasn't for that pissant glass in my right hand, hadn't been upgraded to casks of vino after my "upholstery" job back in 1974 in a one bedroom, 1st floor flat, Only done in vinyl, but so were all out clothes so you didn’t stick to the furniture.
Forget the glass comment... Don’t know who that idiot is… I don’t read.
If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD
Thanks Ducky. Your vinyl chairs were nice. Are they long playing? They could use more doily’s. I gotta have more doily’s! Looks like you’re still stuck there.
Thanks Steve. He’s great. He called me and I came back early from my vacation to pick up the chair. I’m so happy with the way it came out. The bottom of the old cushion had a molded fiberglass piece under the upholstery. He made it just by using super heavy weight upholstery foam. He’s an artist.
I don’t know what it is about you Ducky. I don’t have the formal but you make me laugh like that 3 legged guy that Rob was hanging out with. But you do make me chuckle. You will last to be a 1000.
James, nice looking chair and reupholstered seat. It is interesting that the seat is finished pillowed top and bottom, yet it can't be reversed due to the mounting method.
Thanks OldTool. Who knows what is on the mind of those designers. I didn’t want to reupholster their chairs original seat I made a new one and had it upholstered. Glenn the upholster thinks the bottom and frame of the original seat is made from fiberglass. The bottom doesn’t have foam in it When I taped on it, it was solid.
Thanks Splinter. I’ll just store the original cushion in the cushion in a bag in the closet. I think Ducky will want it entered in the Aussie Olympic’s in the Disc Throw.
No fart sounds from the new leather cushion. I sat on it once just to feel how comfortable it was. To me it’s a piece of art and nobody can sit on it including the cat.
Gotta say good luck with that! When we had cats, all the furniture, especially anything that was leather, got shredded. Given a choice between carpet covered cat scratch posts and leather, they chose leather.
Still, you can always set some deterrent on it. Tub of soapy water for a cat bath? I'd have it behind a velvet museum rope-off.
Did you have to do much cleaning on the wood when received?
Splinter I did order the red museum rope from eBay. No cleaning on the wood. It was in very good shape when it arrived.
My cat must be over 18 years old and very smart. She sleeps on her heated bed and wakes up to eat and fart. When she was younger she would get up in furniture but doesn’t do it anymore.
Ducky can’t even sit on it. That would be pretty messy! Pink boots and nightgowns not allowed.
So if a couple of mouse decided to dine on it, the cat has been ordered , for fear of violin strings, to wait till they climb down... hell some mouses can go for days without eating and longer if they brought their own meals... just dreading all the cat poop around the chair.
If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD
HaHahaha. Ducky I changed my mind. $5 for a sit and for mice and cats it’s $1,000. You’ll be collecting. I don’t know what it is about you but when you post me or my projects I’m the one who gets in trouble.
