How to build an Arts And Crafts Mission style medicine cabinet

I made my own dowels using a down making plate. They’re about 2” long / 50 mm. They are made from QSWO.

I placed this painting I did in front of the cabinet to reflect in the mirror.

This project was posted on other sites. I thought I would post it here before the lights go out.
Thanks for visiting and viewing my project and comments are always appreciated.

Nice cabinet.    Design, look, finish, all together make a beautiful cabinet.

Thanks Ron. Glad to be able to post here again. 🙂

I liked it over there, I like it here! I have some QSWO sitting on the table saw awaiting my attention.

The Other Steven

Thanks Dark_Lighting. Hope to see you post the project when you’re finished. QSWO is so expensive here. Canada just blocked whiskey from the USA. Maybe we’ll get a price break on this wood.

Truly awesome James!

Still amazed at your painting skills, so real-life it's creepy!
Very nice cabinet James, well made, and the write-up is good enough to be a step by step tutorial for others.
Question if I might, I need a clarification on the tacky glue and ironing method for veneer application. Was the glue the Titebond 3 in one of the photos?, and how does the ironing work?, does it soften the glue for adhesion?, why wait until it's tacky?
I tried veneering once, ended up using Titebond also, due to the noxious odor of contact cement but all sources I referenced said to use contact cement.
Thanks
A beautiful cabinet made out of very nice oak. Thanks for sharing and for showing the making process.

Yeah, I liked it back then, I like it right now. Nice work and thanks for the detailed post. You always provide lots of good info. Bravo.

PS - Nice painting.  You are talented and versatile.
Thanks Splinter. When I would enter art shows people would gather around my paintings and try to touch them to see if anyone was in there. That was creepy. 😳

Someone that viewed this project thought that the mirror was transparent glass and was wondering how I got the girl inside the cabinet.

Thanks OldTool. I did use Tite Bond III. It was installed in a bathroom with a shower.

When you use this technique you do have to wait until the glue gets tacky. It’s easier to move it and get the veneer in the right place.
And it’s hard to move it once you set it in place. When I applied the iron on its highest setting the glue gets soft and sticks to the substrate.

I made my own veneer at the band saw. It’s thicker than the store bought type and doesn’t bow or wrinkle.

This was a wall mount cabinet and I couldn’t find 1/2” QSWO so I had to use veneer. Here’s a video I used to learn this technique.

Instead of using a paper bag I used parchment paper.

Thanks Dutchy.

Thanks TucsonTim. I’m having a hard time finding my projects there. When I can I will post them here.

If you do more veneering, you might consider an ink roller (I like the 4" size).
Makes it easy to spread out glue and get it all even thickness. I toss mine in a water bucket after rolling so the rubber stays glue free.
Thanks for the tip Splitter. If I do more veneer I definitely will get a rubber roller.

James,

Your woodworking and teaching skills are excellent, but who needs a camera when you can paint a picture like that!!!  What a remarkable artist you are!
