How does a Toymaker make the most of this beautiful hardwood burl offcut.

I had a birthday last week, quite a big number and to my surprise a bloke who’s been like family (brother) to me since 1960 gave me two bags of gorgeous blocks of timber.
The burl in particular is amazing but how does a toymaker make the most of it keeping it beauty intact.
So folks I need helpful advice/suggestions as to how to approach a worthy project for this piece of timber, keeping in mind I’m not a wood turner.
Thank you in advance.

crowie, there is only one solution....................................send it to me ! 😁
i dont know how you would make a toy from that beautiful burl ?

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Yes, what Potz said, and he won't be home, so asked me to handle it for him. . . .
My suspicion is, were you to sand the inside you'd see some nice figure. In other words, I suspect anything you do following the grain is going to offer up some beautiful product, PROVIDING you make the pieces as big as you can.

Had a genius drop off a load of maple firewood years back. The entire cord was figured maple and he had no clue as to what he had (he tried to sell a short cord as a cord, so don't feel sorry for him).  We are still using some of the spurtles I made from it. The figuring is yet beautiful 20 years later.
thanks buddy 😁

Not really a toy, but I could see this being a pretty jewelry box.
yeah maybe as a lid ? but crowie what size is it ?

Thank you gents for for encouragement and thoughts
Here are a few extra photos of the piece along with a tape measure for sizing.
And YES their is some beautiful figure in the timber!

Make jig and slice some curved pieces of veneer on the bandsaw?

yes that, or it could be a box lid ? definitely not for making a toy ?

Way above my current skillset and I don’t want to muckup & waste the piece

Would agree it’s way too nice for a toy but saying that, my box making skills haven’t reached the level I’d be comfortable trying to make the lid!

Simple... become a wood turner.

If in Aussieland you can be classified as Aboriginal by just saying so... just say you're a turner and Bob's your fathers brother.... was it that brother that lumbered yo with that burly piece?

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Thank you Alex, but Bob was my Father-In-Law and he was a coachbuilder/cabinetmaker so trying that won’t work.
I had an old friend, now passed, who was a Master Wood Turner. He tried for years to convince me to become a woodturner but that didn’t happen as I have no room for a lathe!

The dictionary meaning of the name aboriginal is “ Born of the Country” so yes I suppose I like all other born & breed aussies could be so!

Crowie, regarding your two comments: Way above my current skillset, my box making skills haven’t reached the level,
If you don't try you'll not learn. To be safe, whatever you decide to do and if you are anxious about it, do it to a duplicate piece of scrap pine or construction timber first. Besides, as Pottz said, your prior work shows great skills, so go for it.
As for suggestions, well sorry I'm inspirationally challenged.
The first thing I thought of when I saw that burl was that it would make lovely "upholstered" seats in a model. Perhaps an open-top roadster or some such so they can be seen?

I wouldn't hesitate to use the burl in toys, though. Toys are what you build, Peter, so build toys!

May you have the day you deserve!

I would probably try to preserve the cool "lunar" surface and cut it to make it flat and then use it for the front or lid of a box.

So when was your birthday? Mine was on the 11th.
That looks like some nice pens to me...go over to LBD's house...he'll help you...

Mike

It may be time to learn how to make a Pipe.  that burl is simply gorgeous and it would make a striking pipe.    ;-)
