Cookie Jar Lid

Red Top Tom found this huge jar in the desert and he asked me if I would make a lid for it for his wife to use it as a cookie jar. I wanted to try out my wedge sled with  9  40 degree wedges to make a complete circle. All the wedges were real close  to 40 degrees
and I had to tweak the last one with shims on the sled to make it fit perfectly!!

The lid is 9 3/4" in diameter and about 1 1/2" thick with the handle.  The wood is eucalyptus and it was cracked everywhere  but turned real easily. It is a heavy wood and I used up an 8ft board just to get nine pretty clear wedges. I had 5 scrap test pieces!!
It is finished with EEE and Shellawax. Tom will get it tomorrow !

Looks good, Jim! Looks like the eucalyptus I got from Dave Kelley in a swap a decade or so ago.

May you have the day you deserve!

Good looking lid.   The sled looks great also.    Love cookies.

Ron

Great looking lid! Always neat when ‘found wood’ turns out so pretty…

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Great show of what your jig can do JIm!
8' is a lot of board, but it sure does look purdy!

I avoid odd numbers just because of the frustration in getting that last wedge to fit. Easy enough to cut the two halves to a perfect 180, but feels like cheating now that you make it look so easy!
Purty! Looks like western red cedar by the color, but if it was, you'd know it.

Gorgeous work Jim! Nice work. I can see that attracting the "cookie monsters" easily!
thats gorgeous, he's gonna love it.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Thanks you all for the nice comments ! They loved it!!

Hi Bruce, I wanted to make an odd one because odd numbers like spokes in wheels always look better than even numbered ones!!...so why not wood???????

Nicely done Jim!

Very pretty looking lid and makes this jar into a beautiful and functional display container. Great work with the wedges, I also like the odd number of wedges, good choice.
Found the jar in the dessert, wow,  must get pretty darn hot out there to turn the sand into glass like that.
Jim,

The lid is beautiful.  Your wood choice of eucalyptus is perfect.  Never used it myself.

Thanks Bruce, Moke , Tom and Dave!!!

Hi Tom. It is a shame but the desert is a dump for many people who live around here. There are appliances, couches, chairs, TVs,........... trash of all kinds but sometimes it is usable stuff like this big jar.

This looks great! I had no idea how big this was until I read the post.
Thanks, Steve. They can get a lot of cookies in that jar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Jim,
Great work with the 9 40deg wedges.  very neat.  Is the handle a separate piece of wood ?  I couldn't quite see.
Beautiful Lid and handle for the Cookie Jar.
It would be interesting to know the history of the big glass jar.
Regards ...... Cliff.
Despite perfectly turned lid, those cookies will be totaly deffendless.

Thanks Cliff and Ivan.

Hi Cliff  Yes , the handle is a separate piece of the same wood.
This did get me a full loaf of Banana bread from Tom' wife!!! I would not take any money for it!!!
